Treestand safety.

Being a “boomer”, it wasn’t part of the foundation of our early hunting careers. Climbing stands? Ladder stands??? Didn’t have those! Shinny up a tree, stand on a limb. Build wooden permanent stands. I remember laughing with my brother Brad about some of his set-ups “crows wouldn’t even land on it”!

But times got better. And we got older. And more brittle. And Treestand safety was eventually included in the Hunter-Trapper PGC curriculum. I started to wear a harness.

Last week in Berks county a hunter died after falling out of his stand and being suspended too long. Made me think about which would be worse…falling to the ground or being suspended with blood circulation cut off…also causing death.

No dummy! Use your Treestand Wingman! Nifty safety device I bought a few years ago…but never got familiar with it. Until today! And it works great!!!!

What I love about it is: you can practice with it! It is easily “reloaded”.

Republicans vs Democrats. For years, hunters in Pennsylvania were told Rs were the friendly supporters and Ds weren’t. And we believed.

Did you know legislation passed last week to provide full Sunday Hunting authority to the PGC?

129 yeas to 73 nays. And based on the common understanding one would think we have the Rs to thank for this positive conservation legislation, right?

One party had only 29 of 100 voting members vote YEA (support the bill) while the other had only 2 nays (oppose the Bill) out of 102 caucus members.

So now this legislation, which is an important positive change for wildlife conservation here in PA shifts over to the PA Senate. With the Senate being Republican-controlled, us hunters who believed the Rs are our friends and Ds aren’t can breathe easy! Slam dunk right?!?!

Welllllll….the House vote actual has finally exposed which party really supports hunters in Pennsylvania. While just TWENTY-NINE of 100 voting REPUBLICANS supported the conservation and agriculture supported legislation…100 of 102 DEMOCRATS voted yea. 98% of DEMOCRATS supported Rep. Mandy Steele’s “Steele Deal”….vs 29% of Republicans.

Conservationists…pay attention to what happens in the Senate now. Will the legislation get a chance in the Republican Senate?

Or will Senate leadership bury the Steele Deal….while telling us how much Republicans support conservation, and Democrats don’t.

Did you ever watch Clint Eastwood’s “The Outlaw Josey Wales”? I like the scene near the end of that movie. Capt. Fletcher is talking to a Senator, and he says “Don't p**s down my back and tell me it's raining.”

Chewy …what a thoughtful company!! I’m not even sure how they heard about Katniss’ passing.

Today we said goodbye to a very special girl. Katniss Daub was an incredible story. I am so blessed to have been able to have Katniss as a family member.

Until we meet again Katniss, we will always love you.
