When you love what you do you will never work a day in your life.
Continuing with National Physical Therapy Month, let's get to know a little bit about our Burlington Clinical Director, Dr. Alyssa "Aly" May!
Q: Why did you decide on Physical Therapy as a profession?
A: "I knew I wanted to be in the medical profession since I was a child. Growing up, my neighbor had cerebral palsy, so I saw firsthand the struggles he and his family went through to find good care in the area. I knew I wanted to help people like Davin, so I started doing observation in different physical therapy settings and knew it was the right place for me. And now that I have been treating patients professionally for 2 years, it is safe to say that I absolutely love what I do."
Q: What do you enjoy most about being a physical therapist?
A: "Physical therapy is an ever-changing profession. We see such a plethora of different diagnoses, personalities, and needs in our patients that it is always something different and engaging. My favorite part of being a physical therapist is seeing someone perform a task that they have not been able to do in a long time due to pain or dysfunction. Treating Parkinson’s patients through the LSVT program is very rewarding to see such a large improvement in function in a short period of time."
Q: Tell us one interesting or fun fact about yourself.
A: "My favorite things in the world are my 2 dogs, Happy and Pickles. I grew up right next to the Rancocas Creek and always loved to go canoeing with my family."
Q: What is a favorite memory of a patient?
A: "I once had a patient who had a goal of dancing with his wife at his son’s wedding after his stroke. He had such a difficult time with movement in the beginning, and we took this man from barely being able to walk short distances with a walker, to dancing independently without an assistive device. He was such a hard-working and warm spirit. He finished his care before the wedding and made sure to check-in and show off his dancing skills afterwards.
THANK YOU ALY FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO OUR PATIENTS AND TO SPECIALIZED PHYSICAL THERAPY!
