In Ashtanga Yoga, “Mysore practice” refers to a unique, self-led style of class named after the city of Mysore (now called Mysuru), where this teaching method originated. It’s like having a quiet, guided self-practice with a teacher supporting you individually through prescribed breathing and postures.

Instead of a teacher leading everyone through the same sequence at the same pace, Mysore style is:

⭐️Self-paced: You move through the sequence on your own, from memory

⭐️ Individualized: The teacher gives one-on-one guidance through sharing what they have learned from their teachers (parampara) and their direct experience from daily practice (pratyakṣa), assistance in postures, or new prescribed postures when student is ready

⭐️ Progressive: You gradually learn and experience growth within the series

Why it’s different compared to led yoga classes:

✅ No constant verbal instruction
✅ No synchronized movement with others
✅ More focused on breath, internal awareness, discipline, and consistency, which creates an introspective experience

I have learned that one of the main roles in the Mysore room, as someone holding space, is to teach practitioners to become independent in their own practice. And what a beautiful practice of detachment that is! 🙏🏼 🙇🏼‍♂️

This practitioner here has dedicated herself to a daily practice of Ashtanga Yoga for 1 year and 2 months and soon is time for her to fly away into new endeavors in her life ⭐️
