Timpone Surfboards was founded in 1980 by owner and operator Jeff Timpone. Jeff has over 45 years of board building experience that started in 1970 with Bob Russel's surf shop “The Brotherhood” in Huntington Beach, CA. In 1989, Jeff and his family moved to Maui and opened Timpone Hawaii Surfboards where he quickly became one of the top board builders on the island. Timpone Hawaii Surfboards specia

lizes in custom surfboards, building anything a waterman can think of. Best known for his longevity and experience, customers come to Jeff with all kinds of custom orders. Everything from belly-boards to SUPs, old school nose-riders to high performance longboards, retro-fish shapes to modern high performance shortboards, as well as tow-in surfboard and big wave Pe’ahi (Jaws) guns. Product diversity is something Timpone Hawaii takes great pride in, giving way to one of the company mantras, “If you can think it, it can be”. After 36 years of successful board building, Timpone Hawaii Surfboards maintains it’s focus on building top quality surfboards that not only preform, but have a superior life span. Being in touch with customer’s needs and working directly with material producers and suppliers, allows Timpone Hawaii to stay in tune with the ever evolving industry. Since 2015, Timpone Hawaii has been offing shortboards made with recycled foam and plant derived epoxy resin. These innovative and alternative materials give surfers the choice to have less impactful surfboards without compromising performance. In 2016, Timpone Hawaii’s surfboards are known for their fine craftsmanship, high quality, time proven worth and most importantly, they are all hand shaped. The brand’s proven experience and longevity is built on hard work, sacrifice, respect, humility and never settling for less than perfect. This mean our surfboards and more than just the sum of their parts; these attributes have lead to another one of the company’s mottos, “More than just a surfboard”.

JT, sighting down the board to get a good look at the fin line-up. When the board’s bottom contours are true, the fins (should) simultaneously be eclipsed by the board’s rocker. Disappearing and reappearing in unison, as seen here. That is, if the fin-setter does their job right 😉

JT maintains that the planer is the most accurate tool in the hand-shapers’ arsenal. Here he blends the deck rail of this 9’0” triple-stringer, taking his theory to task.

FCS plugs or FCS II? Many surfers/board builders have transitioned to the FCS II boxes, but some surfers still prefer the plug version. We don’t mind either way, and neither should you 😉

Pleased to say we’ve been catching up on back orders. Big mahalo to all of our customers for their patience. In saying that, if you’re looking for a summer time surfboard, now would be a good time order one. or two ;)

Here’s a great look at the H**p reinforcement we use to laminate the deck’s of our Maui Leaf Lite surfboards. You can see a slight dampening of the airbrush colors from the natural fiber weave. We’ve grown fond of the vintage aesthetic and love that we can use such alternative materials to build modern equipment.

Glass on fins. Some surfers will have it no other way. We love that some customers still want that “old-school” vibe. Many “magic” boards had glass on fins. Just sayin.

JT cleaning up the outline on this soon to be Maui Leaf Lite, EPS blank. He’s using a sheet of “used” 60 grit sandpaper, on one of his trusty wood blocks that is probably 25 or 30 years old.

The final passes over the rails.

Though very rare, every once in a while some blanks will have inconsistencies. This goes for PU as well as EPS. Instead of voids or bubbles in the blank like you can find in PU, the expanded beads of Polystyrene for some reason or another do not cling to each other and make a tight bond as in this case. Luckily for us the good people at are very accommodating, and replaced this blank for us. Though this board is not a complete loss, it is not suitable for our customers and will require extra steps to move this board forward in the build process.

JT, taking down some thickness.

We wish we could share every board that comes out of our factory. Unfortunately, some slip away undocumented. Here’s a little pack that recently left. Never mind the old-guy banter in the background. Just discussing the morning’s surf conditions 😆

Nervous moments yesterday for everyone at the cannery where our shop is located. Something caught a blaze across the gulch, and as the fire grew you could hear the popping of abandoned car tires and fuel tanks. The prevailing NE winds were pushing the flames directly towards the century-old building that houses many local board builder and businesses. The mounting tension was eased thanks the fast action of the Maui County Fire Department, first responders, and the helicopter team. Big mahalo to all the men and women in uniform who’s quick response averted the likely damage or destruction of our iconic work place.
