The fascia connections between the quadratus lumborum or QL for short (we have a left and right one) and the deepest abdominals make the QLs honorary members of the ab club.
Together, the two QLs play an essential role in stabilizing the pelvis when a person is upright. Working individually, a QL laterally flexes the spine sideways.
QLs are notoriously tight and overactive, but are often overlooked as the leading cause of dysfunction and pain. Problems in one or both QLs can show up in the following:
➡️ sacroiliac joint (junction between the lower back and the pelvis)
➡️ lower buttock
➡️ front of the hip
➡️ lower quadrant of the abdomen or groin
➡️ outside of the hip
