Age Change Coming: Soccer Age Cutoff Update for 2026
Beginning with the Fall 2026–Spring 2027 season, national youth soccer organizations are shifting the age group cutoff date from January 1 to August 1. This better aligns soccer teams with school-year groupings. New Jersey’s school cut off is in October, so this change is not perfectly aligned for NJ, but the thought process is that it is “better” than what is currently happening.
What This Means for Spring 2026 Tryouts:
For current players whose Fall birthdays are 8/1 thru 12/31, you will have the option to try out:
-‘Up’ with their current team
-“Age-appropriate’ based on the new August-July cutoff
-Impacted Players will have the opportunity to attend both. Tryout schedules will be staggered by age to offer flexibility
-Any non-current HTSC player who wants to tryout to ‘play up’ will require HTSC Board approval
Rising U8 HTSC Players:
Only those with Birthdays 8/1/2018 thru 7/31/2019 are eligible to tryout for next year’s U8 team.
Once numbers are finalized, the HTSC Board will evaluate if there is a need to further expand eligibility.
