Additionally, we focus on developing the individual rather than teaching mere skills and techniques, though they’re important as well. In fact, you will learn genuine power. Paramount, however, is personal development, skills that will contribute to your daily life -- relaxation, breathing, “centering” and focus -- the ability to conserve and project energy or “ki.” It is hoped that that you will
develop or enhance personal qualities that will help you on the job, in your personal relationships and in your life in general. If you have the good fortune to join us, you’ll find we’re unlike any martial arts school you’ve encountered or heard of. First, we’re an all-adult class; second, we’re non-commercial (though we ask quarterly dues of $150); third, you’ll receive a great deal of personalized instruction and support by experts in the field; and, finally . . . Rather than teaching “sport” karate, we focus on practical self-defense and the development of true power. Because you are instructed to “leave the ego at the door,” students are very supportive of each other rather than competitive. The classes are traditional in terms of discipline and respect, and there are no short fixes. Students are expected to push themselves physically and open themselves mentally, to “empty” their cup, to drop what they think they know in order to grow. Our seasoned instructors have been with us for 10-30 years. Hopefully, most of our members will become life-long students (as we should all be). All we ask is that you become nearly as committed to your development and personal growth in the arts as we are to you. Our style is a version of Shorei Goju Karate, which has its roots in Japan and Okinawa. Ours is both a “hard” and “soft” style, emphasizing both flow and power. We also employ techniques from Aikido, Tai Chi and Taiho Jutsu. Though we have our own association, we are proud to be affiliated with and recognized by the Yin Yang Do Karate Association and the international United States Karate Do Kai. The head instructor is Lynn Philyaw, 7th dan, who began his training in 1964 under Rev. William Foster and Master Phillip Koeppel. He has taught for over 40 years in various venues: Highland Park High School Adult Ed., Far Eastern Arts in Waukegan, College of Lake County -- and now in his home dojo in Gurnee,IL. The class size is limited ( 20 at present, to grow to no more than 25-30). Work-outs are Wednesdays and Fridays 7-8:30 P.M. and Saturday mornings 10 A.M. For an interview or to observe a class, call 847-968-4588 or e-mail [email protected]. We want to help guarantee that we are a “fit” for each other.
“If you want merely a physical workout, do aerobics. If you want merely self-defense, get a gun and learn how to use it. If you want to develop yourself as a person, practice the martial arts.” -- Rev. William Foster, 8th Dan
