We focus purely on self-defense rather than sport, developing street-proven defensive skills, and manage to have a LOT of fun in the process.

Tonight we worked on three applications of a classic elbow/arm lock, including how to end things quickly and even taking them into throws and finishes.

Properly applied, the difference between an attacker having a painful but relatively harmless lesson vs the attacker needing an orthopedic surgeon (or worse) can be a very slight variation in application.

Juji Gatame is a submission hold where an opponent's arm is trapped between the attacker's thighs, and hyperextension is applied against the elbow joint. If you watched the fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, you saw Rousey use this to get the tap and the win.

Chokes or shimewaza, are techniques designed to force a submission by compressing the carotid arteries (blood chokes) or, less commonly, obstructing the airway, leading to a quick tap-out or momentary loss of consciousness.
In a self defense situation, chokes are applied quickly, while maintaining situational awareness. Just because you’ve choked out one attacker, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some buddies.
