Some of you might have noticed while you were at the Guilford Fair that we installed a new sign! The land that is managed and cared for by the Guilford Recreation Club including the baseball field, tennis court area, and wooded trails was originally donated by Bert Whittemore in 1949. A few weeks ago, Kelsey Burns of the Guilford Rec Club board and David Franklin of the Guilford Fair board helped a relative of Bert Whittemore, Bill Morse, install a sign made and donated by the relatives of Bert Whittemore. We hope you like it as much as we do! This is part of efforts made by the board to recognize the history of the donated land. Thank you, Bill Morse, for such a great addition!
Here's an excerpt from the Official History of Guilford, Vermont 1678-1961 book "On August 22, 1949 an organizational meeting of the Guilford Recreation Club was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Clark with twenty-eight people present. Bert Whittemore attended the meeting and offered to deed the club about fifteen acres of land, containing a maple grove for a picnic area and an alder swamp for a baseball field. His one request was that the project be called Whittemore Park. Joe Borkowski, owner of land abutting Whittemore's also donated a strategic quarter-acre or so needed for the infield."
