First weeks teaching in Gualala 🤍

Every time I begin in a new space, there’s that quiet moment of not knowing — Who will come? How will it feel? Will this community receive Ashtanga?

And once again, yoga answers before I can even finish the question.

These first weeks at Physical Gym have reminded me why I’ve been teaching for 15+ years, across countries, cities, studios, and now this beautiful coastal town. It doesn’t matter where I am — when there are students willing to show up, breathe, focus, and do the work, the room becomes alive.

I don’t take it lightly that even in the very first week, there were bodies on mats, learning how to fold, how to stand, how to stay. That trust means everything to me.

Grateful for new beginnings. Grateful for familiar discipline. Grateful to keep sharing this practice by the ocean.

If you’re in Gualala and curious about Ashtanga, come practice. The door is open.

A few years ago, after coming back from a 10-day meditation retreat, I felt a strong wish to encourage my students to experience retreats themselves. I wanted to offer a space where they could taste something similar to what I always feel after stepping away for a few days of deep practice.

For a long time it stayed just as an idea. I felt a bit intimidated by it and didn’t know where to start. One day I mentioned it to , and she simply said, “Ok, let’s do it.” And that was the beginning.

Since then Kim and I have been hosting two retreats every year — March in New York and July in Northern California.

While preparing for the upcoming New York retreat, I was looking through pictures and found these memories from the last two years.

Different places and different groups, but always a similar rhythm — morning practice, breathing together, time outside, shared meals, quiet moments.

Something becomes simpler when we spend a few days practicing together like this.

I feel very grateful for these days and the people who make them possible.

If you feel the call to step away for a few days of practice, you can find more information in the link in my bio.

First week at Physical Gym… and my heart is full. 🤍

There is something so humbling about walking into a new space, laying down the mats, and not knowing who will show up. And yet, somehow, every time I begin again in a new place, the right students arrive. Even in the very first week.

I’ve been teaching for 15 years now — from Venezuela to Colombia, Honduras, New York, and now here on the coast of California. Each move has meant starting over in some way. New room. New faces. New rhythm. But the essence is always the same: practice, breath, presence.

What moves me the most is this — I don’t “become” a teacher on my own. I become a teacher because students show up. Because they trust me with their bodies, their focus, their time. Because they sit down on the mat and try.

This first week at the gym reminded me of that again. Grateful for this beautiful space. Grateful for new beginnings. And deeply grateful for the students who make me a teacher, wherever I am. 🙏🏼✨

If you’ve been thinking about coming, this is your sign. There’s space for you.

A little life update…

A year ago, I left Redding to follow the ocean, I ended up in Point Arena. This coast has been quietly reshaping my rhythm, and I’m so grateful to now be planting deeper roots here.

For those who are newer to my world, I’ve been teaching yoga continuously for the past 15 years, with several years of training in India deeply shaping my foundation in this practice. My teaching journey has taken me from Venezuela to Colombia (2 years), Honduras (3 years), New York (7 years), and now California (2 years). When I’m not teaching in a studio, I teach online — something that has allowed me to share this work consistently and stay connected to students no matter where life takes me.

Now, I am extremely excited to bring Ashtanga Yoga to a new community here on the Mendonoma Coast.

I’m offering classes at Physical Gym in Gualala, and I would truly love to see this practice grow locally. Ashtanga is a powerful, breath-centered method that builds strength, flexibility, focus, and resilience — and it meets you exactly where you are.

Whether you are brand new to yoga or have years of experience, you are welcome.

Join me at Physical Gym Gualala.
Let’s build something beautiful together.

What first? Flexibility or strength?
Many people view asanas and advancing in the practice of asanas predominantly as a matter of becoming more flexible. However, flexibility is always in a dynamic relationship with strength. As we practice asana, there is an ever evolving relationship between becoming strong and staying steady while opening up the body.

For those of you who have asked where I am teaching from!
This is my Colorado mountain home, we live in a trailer off the grid only when weather permits (usually from June to November). We have satellite internet which we turn on and off when we need it,m -which is actually one of my favorite parts of living in here, not having continue internet :)
Last year I was teaching all my classes outdoors which was a problem because the weather is very erratic in here. I could start the class with blasting sun and 80 degrees and 15 min after I would have hail pouring down on me -and the computer- with 40degrees.
This year we built a little yoga room around 50 feet away from the trailer (you can see it in the middle of the picture) from where I can teach, it is equipped with a little propane heater that keeps me fairly warmed, and I have a little solar generated power bank that keeps my computer, speakers and light running and charged!
I love being here and I love even more the opportunity of teaching while here.

In 2015 few months after I opened Ashtanga Yoga Long Island I had an accident where I fell down on steps. I had sacrum fractured, lower disc herniated, the three discs above bulged, 50% of the piriformis muscle teared, and upper fibers of the gluteus maximus teared as well. If someone told me by that time that I will ever be able to perform back bending postures again I would have not believe it since I couldn’t even stand straight for almost a month after I fell.

Some days my back feels better than others and of course how deep I can go in my practice always depends on that, but in general at present I am able to perform deep back bending postures as I did before the accident, only that now I do it with way more awareness and knowledge than I used to do it before.

Please never ever give-up, don’t let the pain become suffering, understand it and learn from it!
