A newly released study by Cambridge Econometrics puts numbers to what we've been saying all along, "Bikes mean business." They report on the 81-mile New Haven & Northampton Canal Greenway, which includes our local 7.4 mile segment of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, estimating that current trail users spend $15.1 million each year. This could rise to $32-$58 million annually if the trail was completed. Other indirect economic benefits are estimated to be even larger.
"Each year the trails remain unfinished represents a missed opportunity for the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Communities, businesses, and residents are forgoing the significant economic benefits that completed off-road trails can bring, from increased tourism and local spending to job and business growth."
