LAURA BAVAIRD AND ELAYNA BOWSER FALL IN ROUND OF 16 AT U.S. WOMEN’S MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP; BAVAIRD MAKES HOLE-IN-ONE

Michigan golfers Laura Bavaird of Trenton and Elayna Bowser of Dearborn won round of 32 matches, but fell in the afternoon round of 16 at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Tuesday at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Palm Beach, Calif.
Bavaird had a tournament highlight with a hole-in-one on the par 3 fourth hole (150 yards) in her 4 and 3 win in the round of 32 over Ching-Tzu Chen of Chinese Taipei. The 39-year-old director of the Golf Association of Michigan Foundation then lost 3 and 2 in the round of 16 to Ina Kim-Schaad of Jupiter, Fla.
Bowser, 28 and a real-estate agent, had to go 19 holes to win over Sarah Willis of Eaton, Ohio, in her round of 32 match. She then was topped by Jennifer Wong of Monlo Park, Calif., 2 and 1, in the round of 16.
Earlier Tuesday, Mary Kartes of Kentwood, 28 and an LPGA Tour Representative for Callaway, lost in the round of 32 to Justine Fournand of France, 4 and 3, and former Michigan golfer Jacqueline Setas was knocked out of the tournament by Judith Kyrinis of Canada, 2 and 1.
The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Wednesday with the championship match on Thursday. Follow scoring at usga.org
