The absolute minimum disc golf setup is a single neutral putter or mid-range disc, though most players recommend a three-disc starter set.
The 1-Disc Setup (Absolute Minimum)
* What it is: One neutral-flying putter (like an Innova Aviar) or a straight mid-range (like a Buzzz or Shark).
* Why it works: You use this single disc for driving, approaching, and putting into the basket. It forces you to learn proper throwing form without worrying about complex disc choices.
The 3-Disc Setup (Recommended Minimum)
Most beginners start with a standard three-disc starter pack because it covers every basic shot type:
1) Putter: Designed to fly straight and drop softly into the metal basket (used for putting and short throws).
2) Mid-Range: Flies farther and straighter than a putter with a comfortable grip for intermediate throws.
3) Fairway Driver: Has a sharper edge to get extra distance on open holes. (Note: Avoid high-speed "distance drivers" as a beginner, because they require advanced throwing power to fly correctly).
