Spoiling your horse is nothing to brag about, yet many, maybe even you continue to do it.
You can take incredible care of your horse and not spoil them. There is a difference and in fact impossible to do both.
A few years back a student asked me in a clinic what I meant by ‘spoiling a horse’. This was a fantastic question. Many times I’ll refrain from certain terms because they can cause people to put up barriers but at times you have to call a spade and spade, call out the white elephant in the room per se, and create a path to move forward. The horse was downright spoiled.
I’ll share with you what I shared with her.
By definition, to be spoiled is to be: harmed in character by being treated too leniently or indulgently.
None of us want to harm our horses. Yet many are way too lenient or overly indulgent in their horses (and maybe kids too).
Our horses need us to be their leader.
Our horses need us to be consistent.
Our horses need us to be disciplined.
Our horses need us to be willing to provide guidance even when they haven’t asked for it.
Our horses need us to be willing to give them responsibility.
Our horses need us to be willing to hold them accountable.
Our horses need us to be willing to deploy empathy when they need it most.
Our horses need us to be willing to make changes within ourselves so we can better serve them as the leader they deserve.
Those that will say these are human constructs that horses aren’t able to understand, I say false. It is how you present each of these things to your horse that makes all the difference. If presented correctly a horse can easily understand them.
It’s our responsibility to ensure our horses are set up for a lifetime of success within a domesticated environment which we brought them into. Spoiling them will never serve them and nearly every time- these habits don’t start with the horse, they began long before in our own lives. That’s where we must start.
