The shaka đŸ€™ is popular in skydiving because it represents the relaxed, positive culture of the sport.

The gesture has roots in Hawaii, where it’s commonly used to mean “aloha,” “hang loose,” “all good,” or “take it easy.” As skydiving grew, especially through drop zones with strong Hawaiian and West Coast influences, the shaka became a natural fit for the community.

Skydivers use it because it symbolizes:

How controllable are modern-day parachutes? đŸȘ‚

One of the biggest surprises for first-time skydivers is just how much control a modern parachute has.

Today’s ram-air parachutes fly more like a wing than the old round parachutes you see in movies. They can make smooth turns, fly into the wind, adjust speed, and land with incredible accuracy. An experienced canopy pilot can often land within just a few feet of their intended target.

For tandem skydives, your instructor is in complete control the entire time. Once the parachute opens, you’ll enjoy a peaceful, scenic flight back to the landing area with breathtaking views—and if you’re feeling adventurous, your instructor can even add a few fun turns on the way down!

The freefall gets all the attention, but many people say the parachute ride is their favorite part of the experience.
