Furman 8 - College of Charleston 33:

Furman drop their first match of the year and pull into the bye week at 2-1. College of Charleston were well drilled and executed a very solid game plan with speed and determination.

The game was back and forth until the 25th minute when C of C scored a try and added their conversion for a 7-0 lead. Furman failed to capitalize on two first half scoring opportunities of their own (held up in goal after a nice crash ball, and a bad knock on at the base of a 5 meter attacking scrum), and C of C made them pay with another converted try of their own.

Although the scoreline was close at the half (14 -0), in truth Furman were chasing the match from the start. We got outplayed by a better team on the day, and we tip our hats to them.

We look forward to having some time off for Fall Break, and will be looking to improve in certain areas before our next match at the Citadel in two weeks time

URGENT REQUEST:

If you have ever been involved with the Furman Rugby program, I am asking you to take a few minutes to read this story, and to make a donation to help.

Michael Erickson is a former Furman Rugby player and he is going through some extraordinary health issues. I had the pleasure of coaching and playing with Michael while he was at Furman. I knew him and his wonderful wife (Kirsten) before they started dating.

Michael "Sven" Erickson was one of the transformational players to come through Furman. He was selected to multiple all-star teams, and eventually won an invitation to the USA Eagles 7's camp.

Please consider donating to their GoFundMe campaign. It does not matter if you can give a $1 or $10,000, your contribution will help them cover the mountain of bills that are coming.

Thank you very much.

Gavin Joseph - Furman Bound:

We look forward to adding big number 60 to the team this Fall. Gavin is a multisport athlete (football, powerlifting, & wrestling) who will be majoring in Accounting.

At 5'11 - 235lbs he should be a very nice addition to our already sizeable frontrow. His PR for the squat is 585lbs. I can't wait to see him on the pitch
