It is estimated that 37% of adults can't swim the length of a pool, making them at risk for being one of the 8-10 drowning deaths in the US every day. Adults who fear the water frequently passes this fear on to their children, making t
hem at risk as well. I want to begin taking steps to change this. As a nurse, I am frequently see the need to promote good health habits such as daily exercise, and swimming is one that can be learned and enjoyed at any age. It is also one that can save your life. Swimming has always been part of my life; growing up on a lake, neighborhood swim team, life-guarding and teaching lessons. I taught my 3 boys to swim as babies, and we spent most of our summer on the lake or at the beach. They too swam on a team and were lifeguards. In 2004 I capitalized on my swimming ability and began competing in triathlons, rising to the top of the SC master’s. In 2011, I tackled the ultimate distance completing Ironman Canada. I joined the Greenville Splash Masters team to help my swim training, and rediscovered my love for swimming. Sidelined by hip surgery, the pool became my refuge and I began to really appreciate my ability to swim. I felt so strongly about sharing my love of swimming, that I chose to obtain certification through USMS as one of the few ALTS (Adult Learn-To-Swim) instructors in SC. USMS is the governing body for adult swimming, and their mission is "to promote health, wellness, fitness and competition for adults through swimming". In keeping with this mission, they have developed an approach to teaching swimming geared solely for adults, who often are fearful to attempt the challenge of learning this lifesaving skill, and can't be taught by the same methods as children. Our goal is to teach as many adults as possible to swim, while hopefully instilling a desire to enjoy the lifelong benefits of swimming. My background as a successful triathlete and competitive swimmer enables me to provide additional stroke work instruction for those interested in completing their first triathlon or just improving their skills to enjoy swimming on a regular basis. Being an ICU nurse for 29 years hopefully provides an added level of security for the more fearful learners. I have recently become USAT Triathlon level 1 certified coach and would LOVE the opportunity to help you tackle your 1st triathlon as I gain experience as a triathlon coach. This venture is a mission in faith out of my love of swimming and my desire to make a difference. Please contact me if interested to arrange for private or group lessons.
