70th Anniversary of Cy Young’s Passing

Today marks 70 years since the passing of baseball legend Cy Young (November 4, 1955). Born Denton True “Cy” Young on March 29, 1867, in Gilmore, Ohio, he lived to be 88 years old, leaving behind a record that still stands as one of the most astonishing in sports. ⚾️

From his debut with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890 to his final season in 1911, Young defined what dominance and durability meant on the mound:
• 511 career wins — the most in Major League Baseball history
• 7,356 innings pitched, 815 starts, and 749 complete games — all still unmatched
• Five-time league wins leader, and the 1901 Triple Crown winner for wins, ERA, and strikeouts
• Threw the first modern-era perfect game on May 5, 1904, with the Boston Americans (now the Red Sox)

After hanging up his spikes, Cy returned home to Ohio to live a quiet farming life until his death on November 4, 1955. The following year, MLB introduced the Cy Young Award to honor the best pitchers in his name — a fitting tribute to the standard he set.

We mourn the loss of Coach Tim Wallace, a true legend in the world of college baseball. Over his remarkable 34-year tenure at Spartanburg Methodist College, Coach Wallace amassed 1,351 wins, ranking him fourth all-time in junior college baseball. His leadership guided the Pioneers to 12 NJCAA Region 10 titles and seven appearances in the JUCO World Series.

Coach Wallace's dedication extended beyond the field. He mentored countless young athletes, with over 150 of his players signing professional contracts, including four-time MLB All-Star Orlando Hudson. His contributions were recognized with inductions into both the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Spartanburg Methodist College Hall of Honor in 2012.

Prior to his coaching career, Wallace excelled as a player at Wofford College, setting records for career batting average (.456) and a 37-game hitting streak. He also spent seven years in professional baseball, including time with the Montreal Expos and St. Louis Cardinals.

Coach Wallace passed away on May 16 after a courageous nine-month battle with brain cancer. His legacy of leadership, integrity, and passion for the game will continue to inspire generations to come.

We mourn the passing of Fay Vincent, the former Major League Baseball Commissioner, who passed away on February 1, 2025, at the age of 86. Fay’s leadership left an indelible mark on the sport, from his service as commissioner from 1989 to 1992, to his lasting impact on the game he loved. Before becoming commissioner, Fay built a strong foundation as a lawyer and executive, shaping the sport from behind the scenes.

One of his most defining moments came during the 1989 World Series when a devastating earthquake hit the Bay Area. In the face of chaos, Fay made the difficult yet necessary decision to pause the series, prioritizing the safety of players and fans. His leadership in that moment was a testament to his strength and commitment to the sport.

Though his tenure was marked by challenges, including his handling of the Marge Schott controversy and the Pete Rose gambling scandal, Fay remained steadfast in his dedication to protecting the integrity of the game. In retirement, he continued to influence baseball and sports law through writing, speaking, and his passion for the game.

Fay’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication, courage, and integrity. Rest in peace, Fay Vincent. Your contributions to baseball will never be forgotten. ⚾️
