Some people work at the Y. Others become part of its heart. ❤️
For more than 35 years, Mary has been both a Southwest YMCA employee and member—wearing many hats and teaching a variety of classes where members come to move, laugh, connect, and feel like they belong. Through her energy, encouragement, and genuine care, Mary has helped make the Y feel like home for so many people.
When Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer, her Y community showed up with encouragement, friendship, hugs, laughter, and even a few hats. 🎗️
Then came a moment this YCON will never forget. A fellow member and breast cancer survivor, Lori, congratulated Mary on her “second anniversary.” Mary was puzzled—she hadn’t even remembered the date herself. Lori had.
It was a small gesture that brought Mary to tears and perfectly captured what makes the Y special: people notice, people remember, and people show up for one another.
That’s what makes Mary a YCon: 35+ years of showing up, teaching, encouraging, giving back, and creating belonging for others—while being surrounded by a community that does the same for her.
The Southwest YMCA isn’t just where Mary works or exercises. It’s where she belongs—and where she’s helped countless others feel that they belong, too.
