Box Calls

One of the questioned I get asked is, “Do you make box call”? Yes, I do but not many. They are time consuming. This one is made out of mineral stained poplar that my Dad cut before he passed away. It has a Purple Heart lid. This a Turpin style type box. Hollowed out from a solid piece not glued up. I don’t own a CNC machine so the inside isn’t as finished looking as some makers. I’ve included a sound file so you can judge for yourself if it sounds like a hen. 🦃 They are not cheap.

People ask me…”Do you turn your own calls or buy them already turned?”

It’s none of my business how other people do it but I’d NEVER buy production turned pots or boxes and sell them as “custom calls”. Not only do I turn them all but at times I also start with a complete log, have it sawed into planks and then cut them into blanks. A lot of the wood I use comes from the farm I live on or other places right near me. Some comes from old barns that a friend tears down.

Here’s some wormy chestnut, walnut and persimmon as an example.

Custom should mean custom!

Hunters are great customers!

In all the years we’ve made turkey calls only 1 person ordered a call and didn’t pay for it. I’ve mailed many calls prior to receiving payment and never worry if payment will be made. Hunters are great customers! 🦃
