Dutton Sensei’s Ten Commandments of Ukewaza

1. Thou shalt love thy face and avoid contact between it and nage at all times.
2. Thou shalt guard thy face with thy free hand, shouldst thou have one.
3. Thou shalt continue attacking until forced to fall down.
4. Thou shalt keep thy wrist, arms, and shoulders relaxed throughout the technique.
5. Thou shalt fall to the mat as softly as a babe of three.
6. Thou shalt make no angles with thy elbows during mae ukemi, but constrain thine arms to a gentle curve.
7. Thou shalt tap out before thou feelest much pain during pins and joint locks.
8. Thou shalt not force nage to drag you through the technique by being a rigid, unmoving buffoon.
9. Thou shalt not fall before becoming fully unbalanced.
10. Thou shalt immediately tap out the moment thou feelest pain in thy flesh.
