Brady and I had fun fishing our last tournament of year last week - the Duck Creek Walleye Series championship. Brady played in a terrific game of varsity football on Friday night, got home just after midnight and was back up by 4:30 to battle the wind and some walleyes. Despite being very tired and sore he stayed at it all day and put several scoring fish on our card. We ended up in 6th place of the 43 teams that were invited to the championship capping off a really strong year for us!

The boat and electronic set up was the best I have had yet which played a key role in our year. In those 4 tournaments we trolled no more than 20 minutes in total spending our time on the bow casting at fish on Livescope. We set up the bow with 2 graphs on Stabil Mounts, one for me and one for him and 2 livescopes on poles on each side allowing us concentrate on our own side. We powered them with a Norsk 16v battery for clean and strong power. The Power Poles make all the difference as when they are in the water the boat tracks perfectly straight without any effort from us and keeps fish slowly moving by as we get pushed by the wind, keeping us busy the entire time. The best part is we get to talk and tease each-other all day which definitely adds to the fun.

The 2025 Nitro is a significant improvement over the 2023 design I had previously and it provides an incredible rough water ride. I still feel the Mercury 300 Verado is the perfect set up when it comes to speed, reliability and fuel expense.

Looking back on this series and year we used only 2 different lure types to catch our fish for all events. The one thing that stood out as a learning lesson was the importance of the weight when using each lure type. It was often the difference in a couple bites or a lot of bites. No change in color, just weight was the difference in follows and bites.

I hope everyone had their best year of fishing and is looking forward to next years open water season as much as I am.

What a May it was!! I don’t remember a May that was this excellent on the bay with a strong walleye bite that lasted the entire month before the pesky alewives showed up to ruin it but we has just that this year.

The walleyes continued to be very shallow (1-6’) throughout the month which made me thankful for the Norsk lithium 16v battery that provided power to my Garmin electronics. I call this out because it provides a substantial improvement over standard 12v batteries, especially in shallow water.

Something else this year that was new for me was the lack of trolling that took place in my boat, i would guess under an hour in total. My number one bait that i just cant just put down are jigs from On the Fly Tackle LLC. It’s been that way for a few years but this year was just an obsession. The difference in the weight and the head make are incredible, almost like they are totally different baits. With this much use I feel I’ve learned a lot about when to use each and the success is proving it.

When I have put down a hair jig long enough to use something else CrushCity plastics have been really good along with some different jerk baits, something I’m really working to understand when, where, and which to use, but something that I feel confident I can use all year long.

This boat set up continues to be my favorite. I’ve had a Power Pole on my boats in the past, but going to 2 is a complete game changer when it comes to casting. They allow me to significantly slow my boat in big winds, they add length to my boat and reduce bow lift in big waves and they have seen plenty of use locking me down next to a pod of walleyes in the shallow waters I’ve been fishing. As for the slowing me down in big winds we bad a day where the trollers and I couldnt get below 1.5-1.6 due to the winds, turn the drift paddles out and deploy the poles and i dropped down to .65 with surges of max .75. As I drifted this would allow me to get 2-3 casts on each fish and ensure with the big winds I dropped it just right on them.

In May I only had one tournament and it was another Duck Creek tournament with my son Brady. We once again broke 40lbs for the 2nd tourney in a row this year and landed ourselves in 8th place. The bite was so good that day that the series competitors landed 2x more fish than the last tourney despite having a smaller field. This finish and our 2nd place in the last one has us sitting in first place for Team of the Year with the smallest of margins. So now we wait till August to see how it all shakes out!

June is here and so are the alewives, so it’s starting to slow down on the bay, but I’m sure it will bring a promising July as usual.

Another fun tournament with Brady is in the books and boy did the bay show itself off this weekend!!

We fished the second event of the Duck Creek Walleye Series and based on the high winds forecasted I spent my time on the west shore knowing it would be extra difficult to cast on the east shore in 4+ foot waves. It was pretty obvious that the west shore was full of hungry walleyes as it seemed every spot i stopped at had one waiting. This was fun, but it made the challenge being which spot held winning fish. Both pre fish days we were able to get over 40lbs just hopping around and although we felt confident there was a pattern to where the walleyes were, we knew many would find willing walleyes waiting to eat whatever lure passed by.

I was pretty excited when one of my absolute favorite spots had many big fish loaded up on it making our decision on where to go easy. We knew we would spend the day with the Power Poles down creating a slow drift allowing us to make 2-3 casts with our On the Fly Tackle LLC hair jigs at each walleye that glowed on our Livescope. Our first 2 drifts resulted in 5 walleyes filling out our card by 8am with 2 of those being 26”ers which we felt was a good start. Despite what seemed like early success it was obvious that the larger following walleyes just didn’t like something about our offer and when they got close to the boat they would turn and swim the other way. Around 11 we made a decision to take a run and go check some other spots I liked to find the wind gusts were worse and the water was too dirty. So we headed back and quickly caught another walleye by 12:15. At this point we had boated 8-9 walleyes and looking at my hair jig that I know has been in the mouth of 100 walleyes this year it was time to retire it. In the process of doing so, for some reason, I decided to use a different weighted jig of the same color. The next cast was a 28” and the start of putting around 20 walleyes in the boat before 2:50 when finally we came across a mark that we couldn’t let get by. We both took several casts at it before I took a deep breath and told Brady to give me one more crack at it, this time I got its attention and one hop in a beautiful 29.25” bit putting us finally over 40lbs on the day.

If anyone knows how I view the tournaments it’s about beating the fish. We said 36lbs is a good day, a day over 40 is winning against the fish, so we’re proud when it happened! At the end of the day 12 teams beat the fish and got over 40lbs into their boats as well which resulted in a 8th place finish for us, our second 40lb lower bay bag tourney in a row.

This placement along with our second place in the last DC has us set up strong for Team of the Year, something that would be an exceptional accomplishment for my son and I to do together. Unfortunately we have to wait till August for the next/last one and to see how it all turns out.

A few things to note - Power Poles with drift paddles are the bomb. It has transformed my ability to target fish in wind. Norsk 16v battery coupled with Livescope is a must if you want screen clarity, especially in shallow water under 5 feet. The new hull/jackplate makes this Nitro by far the best boat I have ever ridden in and that’s saying a lot as my past Zv20s were impressive.

Good day everyone,

I want to provide a recap of April’s fishing. I had the opportunity along with different partners to fish in 3 tournament’s to start the year off.

First was Swamp Donkey where over 150 teams of up to 4 people per boat met on the Fox River in De Pere. As usual it was a poor weather day being rain and cold. The bite was not going so well we packed up around 1pm. This was mostly due to how wet and cold our hands had gotten making it uncomfortable and borderline unsafe to continue. Hats off to those that stuck it out and those that caught the right fish!

The following weekend we fished the AIM event based out of Green Bay. Here we could go into the lower bay and up the river. Our pre-fish was stronger in the river so we went there. We found the right fish but despite throwing everything at them the majority had their lips sealed resulting in snagged walleyes and not legally caught walleyes. We made a late day change of location and presentation and my partner Wayne was able to set the hook on a couple vertical jigging a small rock hump. For this event, although it wasnt great, our best lures were light hair jigs casting and white paddle tails vertical jigging. We finished somewhere in the middle of the group and had ourselves searching for an answer on what we should have done different.

My 3rd tournament was the first Duck Creek Tournament of the year. My 15yo son joined me as my partner. We spent our pre-fish day on the east shore and came up with zero walleyes in 12 hours. On tourney day we committed to the west shore starting our day with a short troll pass looking for fish. Once we thought we seen the right marks on the Garmin we set up on those fish. A few casts in and i set the hook on a 28.5 just after 8:10. We poked around a little more and seen one I felt was a must catch. My son Brady ran the brew city livescope pole and I worked to keep good boat position while making casts at this fish. It took 5 casts to get its attention and on the 6th i was able to set the hook! As the lures hooks sank in and she started to roam to the side i said to Brady this one is a 30 and after a heck of a fight in the net she went and out came the lure with bent hooks. Sure enough it scored 30”! It was around 9 when this happened and we worked that area till 11 with nothing to show for it except wishing i would have brought a certain bait with. Based on the weather changes i felt we needed to get shallow so we made a run and found ourselves in 4 feet of water surrounded by hungry walleyes. Bradys second cast he put one in the net and from there we landed about 15 more and lost 5+ right after hook set. Our best 5 was good enough for 44.61lbs and 2nd place. The lure of the day was a 1/2ozOn the Fly Tackle LLC Fly Tackle LLC and the other lure im just not ready to share the details on yet as I need some more time with it in May.

The walleyes over 30” count is now up to 6 for the year, a little slow this year but ive only been out of the lower bay 1 time so far, more to come!!

As for the new boat and set up - it’s by far my favorite of them all!!! The new Zv21 hull is incredibly smooth, pushes water a mile away, planes quickly and with the hydraulic jackplate allows me to get into shallow water without fear and has already proven to smooth the ride when it gets rough. I’m super happy to be running all Garmins this year and I’m finally getting used to the Kraken trolling motor which is a great motor. The stabil mounts are rock solid as they have been for years for me holding my graphs in place. I added a beat down outdoors mount for adjustability and that set up is better than I originally hoped for!! Another change i made this year that is paying off is running a 16v dedicated graph/livescope battery, more to come on why, but it’s definitely worth having. This year I skipped the kicker motor, I’m a walleye guy so my trolling motor has no issue trolling my walleye lures at 2mph all day long so I just didn’t feel I needed. This decision opened up the transom to put on 2 Power Poles instead and so far I’m extremely happy. They have worked great for anchoring on fish in shallow water and during the duck creek tourney I used them to slow my drifts so i could make multiple casts at these same fish when the wind started to whip at the end of the day. So far they are a tremendous tool. It’s easy to skip over my Mercury Verado 300 as every year it runs great, gives me no fits and is as efficient of an engine as i have ever used or heard about.

I received several messages about graph set up so here are more pics. At the dash i used Stabil-Mount 6” elite on right and 8” elite on left. Due to the construction on the teeth the extra 2” results in a change of angle which makes them not even. In this set up i didnt use the step, that would result in same height difference and wouldnt allow me to run graphs as close to wheel as i did. My goal in my set ups is always to reduce wobble, which these mounts do a great job of and them push them as close to me as possible. Not having to reach far from the wheel is safer for eyes looking around and keeps my back more stable in rough water conditions.

At the bow i use 1 livescope on the trolling motor and another on a Brew City pole. The original plan was to mount 1 6” elite mount where i did and then the beat down mount on the floor on the left side next to trolling motor shaft. Unfortunately the design on their gimbal mount pushes the graph too far towards me and makes it almost impossible to sit or reach the pedal. I also tried to mount a stabil mount to the beat down however the beat down holes woulsnt line up In my past boats i always mounted my stabil mounts to the non skip pad - that way they were higher for free and when I sold the boat I could remove the non skid pad and replace with fresh one if someone didn’t want my set up. I ended up doing the same with the beat down this year and I think it turned out incredible. Time and use on the water will tell the official story but as of now I’m super happy.

Thank you to everyone who lended a hand in getting the 2025 Nitro BoatsZv21 ready for its maiden voyage last night. The new hull is incredibly smooth and paired with its 12” Bobs hydraulic jackplate andMercury Marine 300 Verado with a factory Bravo 4 blade it fires out of the hole, has incredible control at all speeds and is, once again, extremely smooth! I would say hands down the best running boat I have been in and that’s after a very short time of use.

This year I went with all Garmin Marine electronics including the Kraken trolling motor. 2019 was my first year running an all Garmin boat and this will be the 4th all Garmin boat since, excited to have made the full switch back and this trolling motor seems like it’s going to be terrific if I stay with a shaft style motor. The graphs are locked to the boat with my favorite mount from Stabil-Mount. These mounts are easy to install and do not move under any beating. For adjustability reasons I also have 1 graph on a Beat Down ultimate. More pics to come later on how and why.

Despite my love for Mercury engines I did forgo the kicker this year in exchange of dual Power Poles. There new one motor system was a breeze to install and looks terrific!! Each year I find myself trolling less, casting more and targeting shallower walleye. In addition the low water levels on Green Bay may provide more use and those water levels are why I am running a hydraulic jack plate for the first time ever.

I still need to order and install a few items such as WavePro seat pedestals. I have been using their suspension seat peds since 2019 and they are 100% my favorite. I can go on and on about them so if you ever want to know just reach out.

Yes please!! Thanks Nitro, this will be an awesome set up and fits into a strong sales segment!

Removal of the horseshoe allows trollers to get closer to the side of the boat, provides a larger “dance floor” to move around especially with multiple anglers in the boat and the added jump seats removes the need to move seats around and adjust the set up while on the floor when out and about with 3+ people. Also the hull throws a great wake for those who like to tube and now allows for easier family functions!!
