Today marks 12 years of Ballroom by Jay.

It’s hard to sum up 12 years in one post, but I’m incredibly grateful for every person who has trusted me to be part of their dance journey.

I dug through the archives for a few snapshots — from my very first studio to the space we call home today. Some of the photos may be a little blurry, but they offer a pretty clear picture of how far BBJ has come.

We had a spooktacularily wonderful night of dancing tonight! Thank you all for sharing your wonderful wardrobes and great company. It truly is wonderful seeing you all and dancing with you. Next dance is Friday November 13th.

What happens if you make a mistake during a ballroom competition?

You keep dancing. 😉

A missed step doesn’t automatically ruin a performance. The goal is to stay with the music, reconnect with your partner and keep moving confidently.

In fact, learning how to recover is part of preparing for a competition. We practice the routine, but we also work on staying present when something doesn’t go exactly as planned.

Most people watching may never even notice. And oftentimes the best recovery is simply smiling and carrying on.

In case you missed it, we’re planning something a little different for February: The Gilded Emerald Gala. Think an elegant evening out with great food, incredible performances and, of course, plenty of dancing.

One of the things I’m especially excited about is the setting. Oneida Casino Hotel gives us the space to bring the entire vision together — and makes it easy to turn the Gala into a complete evening away. Guest rooms, on-site dining, casino access and complimentary parking are all available in one place.

As the planning continues, I’m looking forward to showing you how we’ll transform the space for the occasion.

Costumes are encouraged, but certainly not required. Come dressed up, come as you are or use the evening as an excuse to give your “Thriller” zombie a test run.

No partner or previous experience is required. Just bring your dancing shoes and get ready for a fun night on the floor.

I’m stepping away from the dance floor for a few days!

I’ll be out of the studio today and tomorrow as I'm attending a personal development retreat. Regular lessons will resume Monday, October 12.

Not only does “Thriller” remain the bestselling album of all time, but the short film actually changed music history 🧟

At nearly 14-minutes long, it was the first ever music video selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry.

More than four decades later, people still recognize the choreography almost immediately, and now our group is learning it one zombie step at a time.

What an event this past weekend at the Epic for our annual Dancing With Our Stars event. I had the immense pleasure of dancing with Amy Jo and Krista and I couldn't be more proud of how they performed. They quite literally "put their best foot first" (pun intended) and had the crowd cheering loudly shaking the walls of the building. Congratulations to them and everyone who participated in the event. Your efforts on the floor as well as the fundraising is going to help thousands of people through these amazing organizations that step up and help where assistance is needed. Thank you for the memories, the dancing, and most of all to the new friends I've had the pleasure to meet through this experience. You're all amazing!!

We kicked off our “Thriller” class Wednesday night, and it was just as much fun as I hoped it would be.

If you missed the first class, you still have one last chance to join us Wednesday at 6pm. You can learn the dance just for fun, or perform it with us at the Badger State Dancesport on October 23.
