There’s something to be said about keeping your horse when they are beyond their years of service. In truth, we owe them this much and more.

This old gelding lost his sight years ago, he is retired from riding and spends his days out in the sunshine with his companion. He moves a little slower, he costs a little more to keep comfortable and requires more care.

What you don’t see is the young horse that was full of fire, a force to be reckoned with, who would run through the forest and fields all day for us. The sure footed endurance horse that rode through the Grand Canyon. The horse that would completely change his character and walk calmly and slowly when a child was thrown in the saddle. The shoulder I cried on. The adventurer who was always up for anything. He’s more than a horse. He’s a friend, a confidant, a safe space.

I look at him and see the horse I have spent over 30 years learning about life with, the horse that never let me down even on the not so good days. I see every trail we blazed, every season we shared. I see the blur of the trees we flew past running through the forest. I see a life time of memories.

He is well beyond his years of service, and now we have the honor and privilege of taking care of him through his golden years. He has more than earned it.

Thank you Halle Nolder for capturing this moment ❤️

Bachelorette trail rides are always an unforgettable adventure! What a phenomenal group of ladies! Congratulations to the bride, we ensured she was carried through the forest on a majestic white mare to commemorate her special day.

Saw this and thought it was a good read! I hobble train all my horses, and have caught a lot of slack for it, but the times it has saved them from panic under pressure shows me every thing I need to know ❤️ Hope this helps spread some understanding of the importance of hobble training:

Hobble Training Isn’t Cruel

You know what is cruel?

Coming home to a horse that ripped itself apart because nobody ever taught it how to handle pressure around its legs.

Over the past week, I’ve seen several posts asking about hobble training, and the horse Bettys immediately start screaming about how cruel it is.

One person even compared it to tying your kid to a bed so they wouldn’t fall out.

Honestly? Horrible analogy.

A better one would be handing your kid a bike without ever teaching them how to ride… then sending them flying downhill and hoping for the best.

Disaster? Yep.

That’s exactly why training matters.

Done correctly, hobble training is one of the most valuable lessons you can teach a horse.

One of our horses recently got a shoe caught in a fence.

And because he had been hobble trained…

He had been taught NOT to panic when his feet were restricted…

He stood quietly and waited.

If he had never been trained for that moment, I honestly believe I would have come home to a horse missing a foot.

That’s the part people don’t want to talk about.

Modern horses deal with: wire fences, gates, trailers, ropes, reins, panels, brush, debris, rabbits exploding out of nowhere, plastic bags tumbling across the pasture etc...

A horse’s first instinct is panic.

And panic is what destroys legs, tendons, joints, and lives.

Hobble training is not about tying horses up.

It’s about teaching them to THINK instead of explode.

We’ve personally seen hobble-trained horses: stop and relax when caught, avoid catastrophic injuries, stay mentally calmer under pressure, trust humans more during stressful situations.

Not preparing horses for real-world situations is setting them up for failure not success.

And honestly?

That is the cruelest thing of all.
