The season is just getting started!

We took 5 calls this week, AND did not rush out the door to collect a paycheck

#1 we discussed finding a dog near him he was not in local area, dog came and searched for him but found nothing. (Had mutual friends and wanted to know which direction to go).

#2 was determined to wait till morning and search for blood again and then call for the drone if nothing, well they bumped the deer that next morning and feel that it will live.

#3 This caller had video evidence and we determined from the video that the shot was high, and with little pe*******on did not seem to be a lethal shot, and would have been a waste of money to search.

#4 Previous client called out for a doe that was not bleeding bad but felt like a fatal shot, upon locating the frontal shot was not slowing the doe down.

#5 After searching a lot of thick areas and then a few marshes, we located and while the initial look showed a lot of blood and large wound, the deer was not actively bleeding. Hunter went back to location the following morning and deer was gone. We re-searched surrounding area and determined that this deer was probably going to live, barring any infection or complication from the wound.

3-Year-Old vs. 5-Year-Old Bucks

As a buck goes from around 3½ years old to 5½ years old, he can add a considerable amount of body mass — bigger chest, heavier neck, larger shoulders and an overall more mature appearance. At the same time, his antlers may continue to develop.

A 3-year-old buck with a good rack can have a smaller body, making the antlers appear much larger in proportion to the deer. A 5-year-old may have a substantially bigger rack, but because it's sitting on a much larger body, the rack might not stand out quite as dramatically.

We all have been there, kick up a buck you have seen from the stand before while walking in or out and he initially looks larger being on the ground with him.

So here's the question:

Do you think hunters are more likely to misjudge the age or antler size of a 3-year-old because the rack looks disproportionately large compared to his body?

Shot on Saturday of youth gun and finally finished it the following Sunday after Thanksgiving.

It was a perfect morning—sun coming up and a loud, crunchy woods. A buck came from our left, caught our scent and started to turn around. I grunted to stop him, which startled her a little, and she took the shot. I could tell the deer was hurt, but I wasn't sure how badly. The shot looked low, and later video confirmed she was about 4-5 inches low.

After finding very little blood, we put the drone up around 9 a.m. and located him 300 yards away and two properties over, bedded down. He had been sitting on the wound, so it was hard to tell how badly he was hurt. Without knowing the extent of the injury, and the small patches of woods we hunt there was no choice but to monitor at this point.

Over the next several days, I continued checking him with the drone. He moved very little—maybe 80-100 yards at a time—but kept zig zagging on the neighboring properties where we couldn't get to him without bumping him.

Then came heavy winds during the week of Thanksgiving. I decided risking the drone wasn't worth it. Friday evening after the winds died off I decided to fly once more, and there he was, laying along the riverbank on property where no one could hunt and not going to get any permission from anyone to carry a weapon onto. I contacted ODNR for advice but didn't hear back. Saturday nothing changed, and still no contact back from DNR. Unfortunately watching to him suffer at this point.

Sunday morning, we found that he had crossed the river onto private property. We got permission from the landowner, and my daughter was finally able to get in and finish him. He was in extremely poor condition and had been slowly wasting away.

Without the drone, this deer almost certainly would have been left to die. And had my daughter continued hunting and taken another buck, there is a very real possibility that two deer would have been killed that season.

This is exactly why I believe drones have a place in recovery—not to replace traditional tracking methods, but to exhaust every effort possible to locate and recover.

DEER SEASON IS COMING! BE PREPARED!

Have a recovery plan BEFORE you head into the woods!

Standing in the middle of the woods, scrolling through Facebook trying to find someone to help recover your deer is NOT the time to start searching.

✅ Know who to call
✅ Check what recovery services are available in your area
✅ Have a plan in place before you take that shot

Whether you plan on using a tracking dog or a thermal drone, having a recovery plan ahead of time can make all the difference.

Don't wait until after the shot to start looking for help!

Do deer get conditioned to hunting pressure? 🦌

Does anyone else believe that after a few weeks of hunting season, deer start to figure things out?

It seems like more and more YouTube hunting personalities are talking about deer sitting tight in the mornings and evenings, waiting until the typical hunter leaves the stand around 9:30–10 AM before getting up and moving during the middle of the day.

I’m curious what everyone else thinks.

Have you noticed deer changing their movement patterns as the season progresses? Have you had better luck hunting late morning or midday after the woods have seen a few weeks of pressure?

Has hunting midday actually worked and been beneficial for you?

Or is this just another theory the hunting world is starting to push? 😂

🐄 Traditional Skills combined with New Technology 🚁🐕

Tonight brought an end to a week-long adventure involving four steers that decided the cornfield — and a little freedom — sounded pretty good!

The owner was able to corral one the first morning, and a second steer came back home two days later. But the remaining two had other plans. They spent the entire week hiding out in the cornfield, where locating them from the ground was nearly impossible.

Tonight, a plan came together to use trained cattle dogs to push the steers through the corn and into an area where they could be roped.

Using the drone from above, we were able to pinpoint the exact location of the two steers and guide the dogs and handlers directly to them. Instead of spending valuable time and energy searching acres of standing corn, everyone knew exactly where the cattle were and where they were headed.

Watching those dogs work was absolutely amazing. They knew their job, and once they were pointed in the right direction, they went to work!

Tonight was a great example of traditional methods and modern technology working together toward one common goal.

Four steers accounted for, two stubborn escapees finally caught, and one heck of an experience to watch firsthand!
