🐄 Traditional Skills combined with New Technology 🚁🐕

Tonight brought an end to a week-long adventure involving four steers that decided the cornfield — and a little freedom — sounded pretty good!

The owner was able to corral one the first morning, and a second steer came back home two days later. But the remaining two had other plans. They spent the entire week hiding out in the cornfield, where locating them from the ground was nearly impossible.

Tonight, a plan came together to use trained cattle dogs to push the steers through the corn and into an area where they could be roped.

Using the drone from above, we were able to pinpoint the exact location of the two steers and guide the dogs and handlers directly to them. Instead of spending valuable time and energy searching acres of standing corn, everyone knew exactly where the cattle were and where they were headed.

Watching those dogs work was absolutely amazing. They knew their job, and once they were pointed in the right direction, they went to work!

Tonight was a great example of traditional methods and modern technology working together toward one common goal.

Four steers accounted for, two stubborn escapees finally caught, and one heck of an experience to watch firsthand!

Can game wardens use drones to try to catch poachers on private land? Yes, they can, and they have already been doing it. Right now, most agencies appear to be cautious because the first major lawsuit over warrantless drone surveillance, especially with thermal imaging, could seriously limit or eliminate that power. If a landowner reports poachers and gives wardens permission, if officers have probable cause, if they are actively pursuing someone, or if they obtain a warrant, then drones can be an extremely effective tool for catching poachers, and they should be allowed to use them.

But private-property rights come before the possibility that someone might be poaching a deer. Every time I say game wardens should need a warrant, somebody asks, “What if someone is poaching on your property?” It’s simple, call the game warden and give them permission to enter or fly the drone. It really is that simple. Ending the open-fields doctrine would not prevent wardens from catching poachers. It would simply require them to have probable cause, a warrant, or permission from the landowner, just like the Constitution is supposed to require from every other law-enforcement agency.

Based on 80s TV and movies, I expected adulthood to involve way more quicksand, the Bermuda Triangle, and spontaneous stop-drop-and-roll situations.

And somehow, nobody ever warned us that password resets and extended car warranties would be the real danger.

🐾 DOG FOUND! Great outcome on a very difficult search!

As you can see, the tree canopy makes these woods nearly impossible to see through, and the corn is extremely thick right now. The summer months are by far the toughest time of year for thermal drone pet searches.

Even with those limitations, one thing a drone can provide is the ability to cover a lot of ground in a very short amount of time. We may not be able to see through everything, but we can quickly eliminate large areas and concentrate our search where we have the best chance of finding the animal.

That's also why a recent sighting is so important. Knowing where the pet was last seen—and approximately when—gives us a starting point and an idea of which direction to search.

Unfortunately, most pet searches don't end like this one. Dogs and cats naturally gravitate toward shade and cover—under trees, porches, buildings, heavy vegetation, and other objects that neither a thermal nor a regular camera can see through.

This search had very low odds, but we got the best possible outcome—the dog was found! 🐕🙌

That's what makes these searches worth doing. Even when conditions aren't in our favor, sometimes covering the right piece of ground at the right time makes all the difference.

A little before-and-after of a drainage issue we had in our backyard.

These photos were taken after very similar rainfall totals. The difference is that the before pictures were taken 2–3 days after the rain, while the after pictures were taken just a few hours after the same amount of rainfall. The results speak for themselves!

A huge thank you to Andy Brandt for all the time and hard work he put into solving the problem and getting the water moving where it belongs.

If you have drainage issues, need tile installed, or have low-lying ground that just won't dry out, Andy is the guy to call. We couldn't be happier with the results!
