Today we take a moment for 1 of the 3 days we set aside to honor those who serve in the Military.

Armed Forces day is the 3rd Saturday of May and honors those in Active Duty.

Veterans Day is the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. It is a day to honor all the veterans, those that have served.

Memorial Day is the most somber. It's why you don't see Happy in the photo posted here. It is a day set aside to honor those who gave everything, including their life, in service to this nation and it's citizens. John 15:13 teaches us that the greatest example of love is to give your life for another.

Today I say a prayer for the healing and guidance of those who are left behind and are navigating the grief of the loss. Even though the mission may be valiant, the heart still misses the love that is lost.

Mindset is far more critical to success than we often realize. The story of "The Little Engine That Could" is more true than you likely thought.

Most people work on their physical training and even their mental health. How often do you work on your mindset. It has been said that running is 90% mental and 10% physical. I believe there is a lot of truth in that. We do what we believe we can. Mindset is changing how you view the world. It's not denying truth or all positive thinking. No, it's changing the way you look at things.

It's removing the words like 'just' & 'only' from your training vocabulary. It's learning that you are in control.

May is Mental Health Month

But for those of us who struggle with it's effects, every month is mental health month. That's where Stronger Than The Struggle came from. I am not a therapist. But I do believe you are stronger than your struggle with the darkness. Some days and some weeks, it may not seem like it, but you are.

That's why it's one of my pillars. Because it is a part of your journey. It affects your life and your training in so many ways. You need physical rest as an athlete but you also need mental rest days. The physical and the mental are so very much entwined.

Running is not a magical pill that will cure all your struggles. But it is a tool in the toolbox along with medication, therapy, and more.

While racing isn't the only goal it definitely is a goal for a lot of athletes. For those looking to run that race, part...

While racing isn't the only goal it definitely is a goal for a lot of athletes. For those looking to run that race, part of what my 1:1 clients get is a plan and support in preparing for their races.

This includes 2-3 pre-race calls each year to go over the final details and prepare a full race plan.

That's not all, leading up to the race in training, we will work to find out what works for you and your unique situation. Things like hydration, race fueling, and pre race hitters are worked through.

You may think that a running coach would be all about physical activity being running, but the reality is that's not the truth. Walking counts. Walking the dog counts. Sometimes, like for me today, mowing the yard counts. It all counts as physical activity.

If you're looking for something to help your mental health, it doesn't have to always be running. Walking around the block, playing with your kids, dancing with your spouse. Yes, even mowing the yard can count as physical activity. If you've had the joy of mowing your yard today and you get an easy run, maybe you just skip the easy run and use the yard mowing as your physical activity for the day. It may not be optimal, but that may be where your life is. In reality, your training should meet your life, not your life meet your training.
