Started in 1977 by engineer and cyclist Alcide Basso in his native Vicenza, Basso offers a compact range of Italian-made road, gravel and electric bikes. The Palta II is the brand’s premium gravel offering, and having just enjoyed a month or two riding the British-designed Handsling A1R0evoG with similar spec, I was looking forward to seeing how it would compare on my home terrain of the Peak District.

The carbon frame uses some angular shapes that Basso calls ‘diamond’. The seat tube and down tube both have cut-out sections for the wheels while the top tube widens and flattens towards the head tube. It makes for a bike that looks fast even when standing against a wall.

The Palta III’s frame borrows from Basso’s road bikes, with a reduced frontal area for less drag and increased torsional stiffness around the bottom bracket for better power transfer. The frame isn’t only fast, though; a size medium weighs a claimed 970g.

There is something about riding through changing aspens in October that makes every hard climb completely worth it. 🤩

The trails are fast, the air is cool, and the scenery looks like nothing else all year. If you have been waiting for the perfect excuse to get out on the mountain bike one more time before the season closes, this is it.
