In 1805 Sugar Loaf was the common ground for water (natural spring), shelter (trees for building and for warmth) and grazing (livestock, horses) for the settlers of early Granville. In 1905, with the help of two oxen, they navigated the hill to place a massive boulder at the peak, where it remains today.
Inscribed on the boulder, and barely visible now, are the words: "They Builded It Better Than They Knew. In God Be The Glory Forever And Ever. Amen"
In 2020 a plaque was placed near that same boulder paying tribute to the many volunteers and countless hours spent on "Stone Hill" making it the park that it is today.
The family of Betty Grudin, who lived just off the hill, wanted the memory of her years of dedication, and those she worked with to be remembered in perpetuity.
