Meet Sam Bowers! We are recognizing humanitarians like Sam in honor of World Humanitarian Day! Sam is 10 years old and in 5th grade. In March, he participated in the 5K portion of the Rock 'n' Roll DC Marathon & Half and raised over $750 for the Project HOPE mission.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: I think I'm funny. I'm the oldest in my family and have a brother, Max, and a sister, Amelia. I love sports, and I am working towards my green belt in martial arts.

Q: What was your favorite part of being on the iHOPETeam.org?
A: Being able to run alongside my mom was my favorite part.

Q: Why did you want to raise money for Project HOPE?
A: Every dollar I raised sent $105 in medical supplies. I'm lucky to have good doctors, but other kids aren't as lucky as me. I hope I saved some lives with the money I sent.

In honor of World Humanitarian Day, we are proudly recognizing the humanitarians who have joined the Project HOPE family through Day of Crisis, iHOPETeam.org and ProjectHOPEinAction.org.

Meet Vivek and Diana! Vivek was born and raised in Nepal until the age of 14. Diana is from Colombia and moved to Miami, FL when she was 6 years old. Together they run Pentagon Mixed Martial Arts, an MMA school in the DC metro area.

Recently, Vivek and Diana were moved to respond to devastating earthquake in Nepal by hosting a DIY fundraiser at their gym. To date they have raised more than $30,000!

Q: What was your event?
A: We organized our largest fundraising effort to date, Fight for Nepal, to raise funds for Project Hope’s Nepal fund. As part of the effort, we created a website, fightfornepal.com, to highlight the importance of the cause and the events of the day. Our media team did a great job with the site.

Q: Why did you choose Project HOPE as the beneficiary of the funds you raised?
A: We knew we wanted to work with an organization that was reliable, organized, had a low overhead, and would apply the funds raised directly to assist the earthquake victims in Nepal. We did some research and came up with Project Hope. A student of ours who was friends with a Project Hope photographer also recommended Project Hope. We spoke with a Project Hope rep, saw that Project Hope had volunteers on the ground in Nepal and were doing amazing work out there, and decided this was the right fit for us.

Q: What was your favorite part of the event?
A: Our favorite part of the Fight for Nepal fundraising event was seeing how committed and involved our students were to the cause, knowing it was something very important to my husband and I. Our younger students participated in an in-house tournament and a Kick-A-Thon, and they worked so hard to raise as much money as they could. Our adult students also came through in an incredible way, promoting the event, bringing friends and family, and participating in a Kick-A-Thon. It was truly an amazing day.

Today is World Humanitarian Day, and we are proudly recognizing the humanitarians who have joined the Project HOPE family through Day of Crisis, iHOPE and HOPE in Action.

Meet Tim Killilea. Tim is a firefighter in Newton, Massachusetts and a humanitarian. In his words - "I want to help people overcome the challenges in their lives. I want to help people fulfill their dreams and live with hope."

Q: What event(s) have you participated in to benefit Project HOPE?
A: I participated in Day of Crisis, an Obstacle Course Race that focuses on disaster based obstacles. The concept is frickin' awesome because it combines all these though obstacles with an actual purpose. The idea that the hundreds of sandbags I move and train with can help a community block flash floodwaters is epic. It really got me thinking about all these people looking for a higher purpose and how train for these events.

Q: Why did you choose to get involved with Project HOPE?
A: Project HOPE is old school. Before the word 'non-profit' was scrutinized for how much it actually spends on its mission work, Project HOPE was already floating around helping people. The issue is that millenials did not know about Project HOPE. I would like to change that. I'd like to move the conversation forward about how we can help one another.

Q: What was your favorite part of the event?
A: Definitely, the obstacles that focused around building a sandbag levy wall. We had to move sandbags from one area to another and build a credible wall that would be helpful in resisting floodwaters. I thought I was being strong carrying three sandbags when I see my 6'4" ox of a brother carrying four sandbags at a time. That motivated me to work harder and to train more because I looked up to him at that moment. Even though he is my younger brother. It gave me purpose seeing someone I care about get so involved. It made me think about how my family has helped me out all the time. It made me think about how I can contribute to a team with a purpose.

Thank you, Tim! And thank you to all of our Day of Crisis: Dallas participants. You are all humanitarians
