A unique kind of courage and determination is required to take on IRONMAN training. Now imagine doing it at 17—while finishing high school and working 25+ hours a week to save for college. The discipline to wake up the morning after senior prom to train—after being crowned Prom King, no less—is remarkable.
Charlie embraced every moment wholeheartedly, despite never having done a triathlon and not even knowing how to swim at the start! Once he figured it out, he casually planned a 5K swim across Little Traverse Bay in 60° water with his family kayaking alongside. He kept me laughing (and a little terrified!) with his “Hey Coach Kari, check this out” texts—ski and bike tricks, ice climbing adventures, and even a video of him doing wheelies up the mountainside during IRONMAN Lake Placid. 😱
Guiding Charlie through his first IRONMAN at such a pivotal time in life felt like a coaching sweet spot—where my love for the sport meets my instinct to support, encourage, and celebrate every milestone. Watching a young athlete take on a huge goal with curiosity, trust, and joy has been one of my favorite coaching experiences.
I am grateful to work with Charlie this season... and I am excited for next season as we tackle his next set of BIG goals! For now, wishing him all the best in his first semester at the University of Vermont! Check out his IRONMAN Lake Placid race report!
At just 18, Charlie conquered his first Ironman Lake Placid in 10:44. Read his race report with highlights from the swim, bike, and marathon finish.
