Our Cougar Honors recipients took center stage during Community Night! 🐾🏆
The Cougar Honors Program recognizes exceptional student-athletes, staff and supporters who have made a lasting impact on Catholic Central athletics and our community. This year, we were proud to honor:
Slide 1: Joseph “Joe” Host ’51 — A state champion distance runner and standout in both cross country and track & field, Joe left a lasting legacy as one of the most accomplished runners in Cougar history. His grandson, TJ VanSlooten, accepted the honor on behalf of the late Joe Host.
Slide 2: Dale T. Vanden Berg ’54 — A standout middle-distance runner, Dale captured the 1954 MHSAA Class A State Championship in the 880-yard run and became one of the first Cougars to break the two-minute barrier. CC senior and long-distance runner Mitchell Dunlap accepted the honor on Dale’s behalf.
Slide 3: Ed Wagner ’57 — A two-time All-City basketball player, Ed went on to dedicate his life to Catholic education, coaching and leadership, impacting generations of students throughout West Michigan.
Slide 4: David Gerrity ’93 — A state champion and record-setting pole vaulter, David continued his athletic career at the University of Notre Dame and remains one of the most accomplished track & field athletes in Cougar history. His father-in-law, Lew Clingman, accepted the honor on his behalf.
Slide 5: Sydney Liggins ’13 — One of the most decorated tennis players in Cougar history, Sydney was named the 2013 MHSAA Division 3 Miss Tennis and went on to become a four-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection at Xavier University.
Slide 6: Ben Olds ’88 — The recipient of the 2026 Larry Larsen Booster Award, Ben has spent decades giving back to Catholic Central through his leadership, volunteerism and unwavering support of Cougar athletics.
