Golf Swing DNA 🧬

One of my biggest takeaways from this interview with Tommy Fleetwood on the is how clearly he understands his own golf swing DNA.

Tommy understands the blueprint his swing needs to follow to function at a high level. He has a toolbox of exercises, drills, rehearsals, checkpoints and feels that are specific to his swing. These act like a multi vitamin for his swing.

He executes the blueprint. He doesn’t jump from thought to thought. He has discipline to execute his blueprint on good days and bad.

What amateurs can take from this, his approach to practice. It’s not just rake a ball, hit a ball, rake a ball, hit a ball. He is intentionally executing his blueprint and not jumping around from thought 💭 to thought.

There is a tremendous amount of intentional training — slow-motion rehearsals, working through feels, calibrating positions and rehearsing what he needs to do to make his swing function.

He embraces the mundane.

There is so much we can learn from listening to elite players explain their own process in their own words.

This is a great example of what intentional practice and understanding your own golf swing DNA can look like.

Everyone says time goes by fast 💨. Sure seems like you were just born, and today you turn 8!

Watching you grow up and seeing the son you’re becoming is so special. You’re such a great big brother and son, and I couldn’t be more proud of you.

Your energy is contagious. Whether you’re practicing baseball, playing flag football, golfing (especially chipping in 😎), or whatever sport is in season, you’re always ready to go and have fun.

We love you so much, buddy. ❤️ I just wish you would slow down a little bit on this growing-up thing! 😉

Happy 8th birthday! 🎂 We love you more than you know.

Impact.

In my view, one of the biggest things that separates elite players and ball strikers from many amateurs is their ability to control the low point and radius of the swing.

With an iron, the low point of the swing is generally 3–5 inches ahead of the golf ball. In other words, the ball is struck before the low point.

Here, you can see an elite ball striker controlling both the low point and radius through impact—creating a consistent strike and predictable ball flight.

Control the low point. Control the radius. Control the strike.

The Pros Leave Clues 🕵️ Nelly

One of my favorite swings in all of professional golf is Nelly Korda.

Take a close look at the top of her backswing with a fairway wood off the tee.

She has created:
• A full turn with her thoracic spine and torso
• Excellent width through the trail arm
• A wide radius with outstanding arm structure
• A trail arm that is slightly bent, but not over-folded
• A trail arm that is not retracted behind her
• A trail wrist in extension, which corresponds with a flat lead wrist and a very square clubface

One of the biggest separators between tour professionals and amateurs is the structure of the arms and wrists at the top of the swing.

Professionals create positions that set them up for success in the downswing.

Many amateurs create positions that require too many compensations on the way down.

The pros leave clues. Study them.
