Only at Birchwood Wilderness Camp are boys (ages 7-17) able to paddle from one of the Camp docks into what many come from around the Country to experience: the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. In fact, camps from all over the midwest drive for hours by van just to start their camping adventures at our doorstep. Each camper gets to select the trips they wish to travel with and all trips have
two qualified Birchwood counselors and four to seven boys of similar age or experience. A few examples of trips we would normally offer at Birchwood Wilderness Camp include (This is just a sampling of the awesome trips we'd offer in any given week at Camp):
Canoeing or kayaking trip to any of the hundreds of nearby islands
Rock climbing in the Boundary Waters or on Lake Superior's North Shore
Fishing the world famous Lake Saganaga or one of our nearby sweet spots
(known only by local fishing guides, Birchwood counselors included)
Hiking the Porcupine Mountains or Isle Royale
Mountain biking at Pincushion Mountain
Sailing the mighty Lake Superior and Apostle Islands
DON'T WORRY, experience is NOT NECESSARY to have the time of your life at Birchwood. During Gunflint School, boys will learn and practice outdoor skills such as campsite set-up, tent pitching, trail safety, campfire cooking, canoeing, kayaking and packing dos and don'ts. Gunflint School is conducted in a safe and supportive environment to assure that at the end of the day, each camper feels accomplished and ready for a new adventure.
