I had the absolute pleasure of spending two days this past week with Al, who drove up from New York with his wife to enjoy Grand Lake Stream and dust off a few fly-fishing cobwebs. They stayed at Weatherby's Lodge and told me how much they enjoyed it, especially the meals.

On the water, we focused on fine-tuning Al’s casting, reading the stream, and navigating moving water safely. We also stopped at McAllister's Classic and Custom Fly Shop to talk about his gorgeous Hardy reel. They have quite a collection of Hardy reels themselves, and they put fresh line on his and gave it a tune-up. Al even got to cast one of the bamboo rods they make, picking up a few more casting tips along the way.

Al’s already talking about a 2027 trip to target smallmouth bass from the Grand Laker canoe that’s being built for me this winter. I’d enjoy getting back on the water with him. Thanks for making the trip, Al!

It was a blast and cast kinda day. After fishing this morning, I spent the afternoon hunting with Nemo and Finn, scouting for some new covers near Grand Lake Stream. We ended up in a beautiful alder run that immediately took me back to a cover I used to hunt with Cocoa, Nemo’s great aunt.

What really struck me was the way Nemo worked it - close, steady, and methodical, just like Cocoa used to. Funny how a piece of cover, a dog, and a certain way of working the woods can bring back memories you haven’t thought about in a while.

A good afternoon in the grouse woods.

A good start to upland season. We hunted two classic New England coverts close to home: alder runs, apple trees, pastures gone by, and old roads winding through the woods.

Finn and Nemo both hit the ground running, with plenty of grouse and woodcock to keep them interested and charging onward.

Me? I’m eating sliders tonight. 🙂

We’re now monitoring the salmon around the clock. Where they’re holding. Where they’re moving. Who they’re hanging out with. Nothing gets past Salmon Cam.

I’m not saying the fish are under surveillance…

…but they should probably assume they are. 🎣📹

Another new fly angler on Grand Lake Stream today!

Rusty was visiting Maine from South Carolina and decided he wanted to give fly fishing a try while he was here. He was a great sport and we had plenty of laughs along the way.

Twice during the day, Rusty handed me his rod—and both times, just as the rod reached my hand, a smallmouth decided to take the fly. Apparently my best technique today was simply having Rusty hand me the rod. 😂

The weather was absolutely gorgeous, so we made the most of it with a picnic at Little Falls: grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, homemade apple brownies, and hot apple c***r.

Good weather, good food, plenty of laughs, and another person introduced to fly fishing. Pretty hard to beat a fall day like that on Grand Lake Stream.

Spent the day on the water with Rick today. He’s an experienced angler, and it didn’t take long before we figured out that we have a surprising number of friends in common. Maine can be a pretty small place sometimes!

The fish made us work for it today, but Rick is an excellent angler and stuck with it. His persistence paid off with some smallmouth bass and fallfish brought to hand.

Not every day on the water comes easy, and sometimes those are the days you appreciate the fish you catch the most. Great day fishing and swapping stories with Rick.
