Our coaching focuses on you—building skills, fostering growth, and creating a supportive, athlete-centered team. Skiing for better results

Colorado Mesa University Cross Country Skiing provides ski racing opportunities to students interested in all levels of intensity of participation, from learning new skills to pushing hard through their boundaries. CMU Cross Country Skiing is part of the U.S.

Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association (USCSA), the governing body for collegiate team ski racing and snowboarding in the U.S. USCSA makes it possible for athletes to participate and compete outside the NCAA. In essence, USCSA is Division III skiing and, because it is not under NCAA jurisdiction, it accommodates broader participation. Under USCSA, men and women race the same distances in sprint and distance events. Races are held at many of the same venues as the NCAA races. At the end of the season, the top teams and individuals from each region compete in a five-day national championships in early March. The head coach, Marcin Wiesiolek, collaborates with the student-athletes on their goals and prioritizes the skills-development and fitness training designed to help them achieve those goals. For students aiming for a podium, Marcin believes that good racers come only from great skiers and, for that reason, emphasizes versatility of the skiing competency by training for a solid skill foundation supported by a sustainable fitness routine. He strives to provide an environment where student-athletes develop a life-long enthusiasm for the sport and where positive memories created with the team would last years beyond at Colorado Mesa University. Marcin believes that participation in CMU Cross Country Skiing can positively impact the physical and mental well-being of the student-athletes and can lead to enhancing their life skills, such as self-reliance, positive self-image, teamwork, time management and healthy habits. The team was started in 2008 by Tom Suplizio and then managed for many years by Dave Aschwanden. How to join

Winter success is built during the summer.

We've published our 2026 CMU Cross Country Ski Summer Training Guidance, outlining the principles we use to develop successful collegiate cross country skiers: aerobic volume, consistency, recovery, strength training, and polarized training.

Whether you're a current athlete, a prospective one, a coach, or simply interested in endurance training, feel free to take a look.

As this school year wraps up, we also close another memorable season for the CMU Cross Country Ski Team. Looking at this team photo, I’m filled with gratitude for this incredible group and for everyone who helped make this season possible.

Thank you to Colorado Mesa University, our Athletic Director for Club Sports Reese Kegans, the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association, the CMU Foundation, fellow coaches, supporters, families, alumni, sponsors, and the entire Western Colorado community. We truly felt your support everywhere we went.

But above all, thank you to our student-athletes.

Thank you for being kind, driven, respectful, and caring young people. Cross country skiing is a hard sport, and you embraced the training, racing, and travel with grit, humility, teamwork, and genuine care for one another.

And yes, they are also incredibly fast.

This season, our team produced two national champions, with two more athletes finishing highly ranked nationally in their events. What this group accomplished against much larger programs was remarkable, but what makes me proudest is how they represented CMU and our community along the way.

The best part? Every current team member is coming back next season. We’ll soon announce new teammates, next year’s race schedule, and some exciting plans for the future.

With all my heart: thank you to everyone who helped make this season so special.

Go Mavericks. 💙💛

Our cross country ski athletes, Ellayna, Jack, and Rylan -- Team Butter Boys & a Belgian Waffle -- win first place as a team in today's Rides & Vibes 30-mile mountain bike race. Woohoo!!

Crust skiing on the little snow that’s left on Grand Mesa is actually excellent right now. Clean, smooth, fast, and ridiculously fun.

For Griffin, Ruthie, and Jack, the rollerski treadmill is new, and those first sessions can feel intimidating. You’re figuring out timing while both you and the ground are moving, which takes some getting used to.

That’s why for the first few sessions we ask athletes to wear bike helmets. Even though they’re in a harness, a fall could still mean hitting something on the side. We take the time to make sure everyone gets comfortable enough to use it for full workouts, skills work, and testing.

From a coaching perspective, it’s a valuable tool. You can see body position, movements and timing clearly, give immediate feedback, and have athletes adjust right away. They’re not skiing past you but they’re right there, so you can dial in skills or effort level, while controlling speed and grade to create specific scenarios.

On April 9, the CMU Cross Country Ski Team had a live interview on KAFM. While the focus was on the national titles, we also got to talk about what we’re very proud of; the culture of this team and being part of the Grand Junction community.

If you want to hear a relaxed conversation with the crew, you can listen to the broadcast recording here: https://kafmradio.libsyn.com/cmu-nordic-ski-team-national-champions

One of the cool things about being part of the CMU Cross Country Ski Team is access to the expertise and tools at the Human Performance Lab at CMU. It’s an incredible resource for our athletes, and we’re lucky to be able to use it as part of our training.

One of the tools we’re starting to integrate more is the rollerski treadmill. It’s an outstanding coaching environment: fully controlled, consistent, and incredibly efficient. We set grade and speed, and make the most out of every minute. The coach doesn’t just get a quick glimpse of the athlete skiing by or spend time looking for the right terrain as the athlete isn’t going anywhere, and the coach can carefully observe body position, movement, and timing over multiple cycles without any change in the environment.

There’s also no “free energy” (downhills) on the treadmill. The belt is always moving, so athletes have to be working 100% of the time, which makes it a great tool for building both technique and fitness.

And yes… for the first few sessions coach requires bike helmets.
It takes a bit to get comfortable, but once athletes adapt, it becomes very valuable training tool.

Really grateful for this opportunity and for the support of the Human Performance Lab in helping our athletes grow.
