Comanche Indians first used the 4,200 acres of land that is now the Pecan Plantation. Due to the unusual configuration of the Brazos River virtually encircling the peninsula of land, the property has long been a distinctive landmark just south of Granbury, Texas. The property was known as the De Cordova Bend, named for Jacob De Cordova, an early Texas pioneer who explored and surveyed it in the 18

50s. Virtually abandoned for about 50 years following the exodus of the American Indians from the area, the property was finally settled by a communal group of families led to the site by John B. The community was known as Kristenstad, but by 1938 the settlement had failed and was abandoned. Leonard, a prominent Fort Worth businessman, purchased the property and renamed it Leonard Bend. By 1956 the Leonard Bend Pecan Farm had 3,300 acres of orchard on the peninsula. The Brazos River Authority in 1966 started building the De Cordova Dam. The opening of Lake Granbury in 1969 completely changed the dynamics of the area. The Leonard family started development of the pecan farm as a residential community in the late 1960s. The country club, golf course, airport and several recreational areas and parks were opened in 1971, and the Pecan Plantation Owners Association (PPOA) was formed in 1972 by the developers.

Pecan Plantation residents will have an opportunity to celebrate Independence Day in patriotic fashion during the community's annual Fourth of July Parade on Saturday, July 4.

This year's parade carries special significance as Americans commemorate the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding.

Participants will begin lining up at the Nutcracker parking lot at 4 p.m., with the parade scheduled to step off at 5 p.m. The route will travel down Wedgefield, around the back circle and continue to the clubhouse, where additional festivities are planned.

Organizers are planning a special tribute to military veterans representing all branches of the armed forces. Veterans will be invited to ride in designated vehicles near the front of the parade, immediately behind Pecan Plantation's first responders.

Residents are encouraged to participate by decorating golf carts, bicycles, classic cars, horses, floats and other vehicles in patriotic themes. Veterans are encouraged to wear apparel representing their branch of service or decorate vehicles in tribute to their military service. Residents who wish to honor the memory of a deceased veteran are also invited to participate in the tribute.

There is no cost to participate and no registration is required. Participants simply need to arrive at the Nutcracker parking lot at 4 p.m. start and join the lineup. The parade will conclude at the clubhouse, where additional activities and celebrations are planned. Spectators are encouraged to line the route and join neighbors for one of Pecan Plantation's most popular Independence Day traditions.

Meet Charlie — Pecan Plantation's Pet of the Week!

Charlie is a clever cat who belongs to Jane Wilson. This favorite photo captures Charlie standing on his tippy-toes while taking a drink from a bird bath. Charlie apparently couldn't imagine why his human would place his water dish so high, but being a resourceful feline, he found a way to reach it just fine. Whether he's exploring the outdoors or keeping his humans entertained with his antics, Charlie proves that cats can be just as mischievous and lovable as any dog.

Meet Harley Quinn — Pecan Plantation’s Pet of the Week!

Harley is a 12-year-old miniature Australian shepherd who has earned a very special place in the heart of her owner, Reggie Hargrove. Smart, sweet and full of personality, she is the kind of dog who becomes a best friend rather than just a pet. According to Reggie, he and Harley are tied at the hip, and two years ago, they shared a milestone together. When Harley turned 10, she reached 70 in dog years at the same time Reggie celebrated his 70th birthday. Today, at "84," she has officially become the older woman in Reggie's life.

Congratulations to the Brazos River Cup Winners Patrick Blount (left) and Brady Martin! Even though the tourney was cut short by Saturday's rain, these guys put in one heck of an effort. We'll see them, and hopefully all of you, at next year's BRC!

Also congratulations to Deeloyd Hooser. Deeloyd aced Hole 14 on the second day of the tournament, much to the delight of his partner, David Long. It was his first-ever hole-in-one!

Rain wins this round…

Unfortunately, tonight's Stolen Whiskey concert had to be canceled due to bad weather. The heavy rain simply made it unsafe for our members, guests and staff.

The good news: Stolen Whiskey will be back soon, and we'll be announcing a rescheduled date shortly!

Thank you to everyone who came out Friday night. We hope you enjoyed Little Skynyrd. Keep an eye on your email for details on the rescheduled Stolen Whiskey show.
