Welles Crowther: “The Man in the Red Bandana”, was a Division 1 lacrosse player for Boston College.
On September 11th, 2001 — Welles was in the South Tower of the World Trade Center when United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the building. Throughout the chaos, Crowther found the only working stairwell exiting from the 78th floor. He led a large group of survivors down 17 flights of stairs safely to firefighters.
Welles was last seen going back into the South Tower with members of the New York Fire Department in an attempt to save more lives. The whole time, wearing a red bandana around his face to block out the smoke.
