The Pawpaw Paddle last Sunday went SO WELL and we have to talk about it! This was our first time running this trip, and our first time in years running a hybrid hike & paddle guided trip, and we couldn't have asked for better guests! After starting off with a great omen (a butterfly landing on a guest's hand!), we began the hike with one big fear in the back of our minds - would there actually be any ripe pawpaws? With all the craziness of summer camp, we hadn't had time to check!

But Swepsonville proved itself once again to be the top treasure trove of pawpaws on the Haw, as only a few minutes into the hike we found a pawpaw patch full of fruit, including some freshly ripened! With a few gentle shakes, it was practically raining pawpaws on us!

Then we hopped into kayaks and paddled down to the Puryear dam portage, our favorite place to find pawpaws because it's only publicly accessible by boat. Our guests loved exploring the old dam site, we had multiple green heron and osprey flybys, and by the end of the trip everyone's bags were full!

We're so happy that the trip was such a huge success and we can't wait to do it again next year! If you're interested in trips with us, check out the Saxapahaw Lake Hike & Paddle Tour this Sunday at tinyurl.com/SaxLakeHikePaddle, or see all our trips at hawrivercanoe.com!

A roaring, waterfall-like dam; a great blue heron stalking a secluded cove, a peaceful overlook of the placid Haw; a jut of ancient rock rising 12 ft out of the river – all of these await you, by trail and canoe, on this brand new trip - a guided hike & paddle tour of Saxapahaw Lake!

We'll begin with a scenic hike on the Haw River State Trail as it passes the Saxapahaw Campgrounds, climbs past the 30 ft dam, and wraps arounds the southwestern edge of the lake. Then we'll board our 10-man Voyageur Canoe and show you the Sax Lake highlights right from the river itself!

We had an absolutely blazing sunset on our paddle with Elon faculty last night! Sadly frog choir cove has gone silent, but it was a spectacularly gorgeous evening starring swooping bats, roosting egrets, and even a juvenile bald eagle chasing an osprey! Our group also did a fantastic job staying together, even though the experience levels ranged from wilderness guides to total beginners!

If you'd like to see a sunset on the Haw with the safety, knowledge and confidence of our experienced guides, check out our event schedule and book online at tinyurl.com/SaxGuidedPaddle!

Pawpaws are a delicious native fruit that you rarely find at a grocery store, tasting like a mushy mash-up of mango and banana! On this brand-new guided trip, we'll forage for wild, ripe pawpaws along both land & paddle sections of the Haw River State Trail at Swepsonville, where fruiting pawpaw trees abound in places hard to find by your average passerby!

The forecast for Saturday is clearing up so we just wanted to make sure y'all knew we'll be running a guided Owl Prowl Paddle that night at 7:00pm! This trip is a slight twist on our typical Sunset Paddles on Saxapahaw Lake, with even greater emphasis on the crepuscular critters that haunt the Haw at dusk. Beavers, muskrats, bats, herons & egrets taking to roost, and of course the elusive barred owls we so often hear calling from the riverbanks - all of these and more are will be on our checklist as we prowl their most likely hiding spots. A beautiful and easygoing paddle trip that's accessible to almost anyone, with gentle waters and watchful, experienced guides to help you in, on, and off the water. 🦉

We had a gorgeous post-storm Sunset Paddle on Saxapahaw Lake last Saturday, starring a tree-full of majestic egrets and beautiful pink clouds hanging over a crescent moon. We're well past the peak of frog season, but we still heard plenty of green tree frogs singing amongst the crickets and katydids.

If you'd like to see this wonderful wildlife before the end of summer, we've got two similar trips coming up this weekend - a Sunset Paddle on Friday, August 21st, and an Owl Prowl on Saturday, August 22nd. Both of these guided trips take us out on Saxapahaw Lake, the calmest, most beginner-friendly part of the Haw River, so anyone should feel welcome to join! Join us this Saturday morning for a peaceful guided paddle on Saxapahaw Lake focused on mindfulness and meditation. The still and quiet waters of this part of the Haw are ideal for both inner reflection and outer connection, as the sounds of civilization fade and are replaced by birdsong, humming insects, and paddles gently parting water. Guests of any paddling skill are welcome, with kayaks, canoes & paddleboards available for use.
