Scott Jedlinski, of Modern Samurai Project, is one of the “hottest” competition instructors in today’s world. Last time I looked, he was booked out for a year.

Scott focuses his teaching on “seasoned” shooters. He states in opening remarks to each class, “You’ve heard it said, ‘That slow is smooth and smooth is fast.’ We’re not here to learn how to shoot slow, you already know how to do that, we’re here to learn how to shoot fast.”

Scott may not advocate what I’m about to say, BUT, Scott has spent a lifetime working on his shooting. If you haven’t, and you really want to improve, you need to slow your training down, way down! AND…break it down into separate components and work on each one until you have it down. Then, and only then, begin to combine the components into a fluid movement culminating in a precise shot on target…slowly.

No one or two day classes here. Your training begins wherever you are in the process - you pay $40/hour. The only other students you might encounter are those you choose to bring. Training is self-paced, and lasts only as long as you want it to.

For the vast majority of Americans, we tend to prioritize everything EXCEPT our own defense and that of those we love. And, fortunately, in this country, prior to the present age, this was mostly workable. But today, this attitude is questionable at best.

What sustains us in the perpetuation of this attitude is the thought,”that should the occasion arise, and I need to defend myself or others, I’ll rise to the occasion!” REALLY?

In the words of Archilochus, a 7th Century BC Greek author, “We do not rise to the level of our expectations, but fall to the last level of our training.”

How’s your level of expectation these days? Contact Tonk Valley Defensive Handgun if you want to improve your last level of training, we’d like to help.

It has been said, and I absolutely believe it, “Virtually everyone over-estimates their capability with a firearm.”

Until you subject yourself voluntarily to some form of truth-telling, realistic stress, like the beep of a timer as you demonstrate your “pistol skills” before an audience of your peers…you REALLY HAVE NO IDEA what your true capabilities are!

In 2011, I made a trip to Memphis, TN. Ostensibly, to see my daughter and new grandson. But, it just so happened that I had learned of a Regional IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) Match occurring in Cordova, TN (just east of Memphis) weeks earlier. Always competitive, I registered for it. I had to “know.”

It was my first sanctioned match…ever. I was a top 5 shooter in my local Midland, TX club, but here was an opportunity to pit my skills against some of the Nation’s Best and see how that would measure up.

It was a VERY DEMANDING match, as it should have been, and I was exposed to things I’d never experienced before while wielding a pistol. The scenarios demanded speed and a good degree of accuracy all while moving, running, lying prone, behind and under barricades, shooting strong and supporting hand only out to distances of 25 yards. I had no idea!

Completely out of my element, I left the match totally humiliated… I did walk away with one thing though - a sheer determination to improve! And that is essential!

Here I am a dozen years later. My performance record much better, BUT, it was and has been a LONG, LONG struggle. Do you want to improve your “pistol or revolver craft?” Don’t try to do it all on your own! Get some help; shorten the curve by learning from folks who’ve already been there… come see us at Tonk Valley Defensive Handgun.

Your perception of a firearm’s recoil (pistol or revolver) is influenced by a lot of factors: the way it fits your particular hand, how well and informed a grip you can maintain while firing it, and of course, the cartridge caliber itself, to name a few factors.

Pistols are like cars, there are a lot to choose from, some are more attractive to us than others, fewer really have a practical application for us, and fewer still, fit our budget. Be careful in your selection…

In my opinion, a “newbie” or novice shooter should never be introduced to fi****ms with anything more significant in recoil than the lowly .22 LR (long rifle rimfire). Low noise (always wear hearing protection), low recoil, and lower cost ammunition, allow the new shooter the opportunity to learn good gun “fundamentals” and enjoy hours of fun in what once was America’s national pastime. All this without having to deal with excessive noise and recoil (kick back). It’s a good way to add to our flock rather than scatter the sheep.

Want to try your hand with different pistols? Want to learn the fundamentals of good pistol craft? Want to really enjoy shooting? Come see us at Tonk Valley Defensive Handgun.

I am a student always, an instructor sometimes…

I practiced today…concealed draws from 5 yards on a 2” bullseye. I did the same thing yesterday afternoon, but today with one difference, I changed the grip adapter on my PX4. I’ve been using the medium, my hands are XLs, the medium wasn’t working. I thought maybe… First drill…cold, no warm up…accuracy and speed, compared to yesterday, was a night and day difference…my personal best on this drill…90% on target, average time, 3 seconds.

If your pistol, or revolver, doesn’t fit your hand, nothing you do will compensate for that. You will struggle with accuracy and speed continuously, frustratingly, trying to improve both, neither will get impressively better. Ask me how I know.

And, to complicate matters, if you change platforms (move from a G***k to a PX4 to a Springfield), you get to address the problem all over again. If the fundamentals aren’t correct, you will struggle. We can help shorten the learning curve and all the attendant frustration. Give us a call and leave a message - 432-889-7873.

More than half of this country’s population grew up in urban areas where a firearm of any kind was a tool only useful for police and military personnel. Most of that 50% didn’t need a firearm to control varmints, provide food for the table or protect themselves against beast or villain.

Consequently, half of this country knows nothing about fi****ms or their history in founding and protecting this nation…and frankly don’t care to. And, they don’t understand why anyone else would want or need one…or should have any access to one. It means nothing to them, so it should mean nothing to the rest of of us, right? After all we have “switches,” and other electronic devices to entertain us now. And, outdoor sports are harmful, right? Think of all the UV rays out there.

Half of the US Citizenry really knows nothing about the subject at all…except what the Press conveys to them, and we are a gullible folk. The left-leaning Press, have, and are, convincing the naive, slowly but steadily, that fi****ms are as deadly a thing as cancer or “asbestos?” They are not. They never were.

As with every other thing at our arms length, man is capable of abusing it. Evil men, with evil intent kill other people, with all manner of weapons. They have since the founding of the world, and they will continue to until it ends. Robbing the innocent of means to defend themselves on a par with evil men, simply makes everyone a potential, and needless victim. Ask Hi**er, Stalin, Mussolini, or Tojo. Apparently, we are slow learners, and very poor students of history (a subject once taught in schools).

In the end, as someone once famously said, “Only a good man with a gun can stop an evil man with one.” I like this concept better. I’ll pursue this option.

The handgun accuracy of trained police officers (who’ve actually been involved in gunfights) across the nation is 35% (+ or - 2%). Think about that. Only 1 of every 3 shots fired finds its mark!

What do you suppose the precision of an “unpracticed” gun owner might be under similar, stressful circumstances? The word “disastrous” comes to mind…

“Interpersonal violence is abhorrent to civilized people. It should be. Violence for perceived slights or personal gain is never appropriate.

For those who live in violence, it is simply a way of life. Violence can bring wealth, respect and power.

And therein lies one of the problems: criminals are comfortable using violence while many good people are not. If you are unaccustomed to violence, you may hesitate when you are morally and legally authorized to defend yourself or a loved one.” …Richard Johnson, retired Police Officer & Trainer

Violence has become more commonplace now than at any time in my life…for a lot of reasons, I don’t look for that to change anytime soon.

Are you even remotely equipped to deal with violence if it should involve you or your family? If not, give us a call at Tonk Valley Defensive Handgun and start equipping yourself…
