The Charleston Tour Kicked off their 2024 Season, the way they always do; The Winter Freezer on the Isle of Palms, Harbor Course. This year as it does in most it hel true to its name as a cold front came through the Low Country and dropped the temperatures 30-40 degrees! We wouldn’t want it any other way!
With the drop in temp, we lost a few players and then the event went from tee times to a shotgun event. The Championship flight seemed to be a two way battle between Mike Cobb and Cory Deering. They seemed to match scores all day as both posted 40 on the front nine, but Mike was able to secure the win with a 36 on the tough back side to Cory’s 38.
The A flight had quite the battle as 4 players all finished within 2 shots of the lead. Andy Balao was the only one of the 4 to have one of his 9’s under 40 and that proved to be the difference as He fired a strong round of 80 in these tough conditions; Justin Lippert was hot on his heals with an 81 and Erict Tobias, and Jace Gause both posted solid 82’s with Eric’s back nine of 40 to Jace’s 41 secured the scorecard playoff for third place.
The B flight was a little more spread out as Greg Bagwell opened the season with a very solid round of 82 to secure a 3 shot victory over Jason Courtney who posted a nice round of 85. Glenn Eagerton finished one shot behind Jason for third.
The C flight was also a good battle also. Just about the entire flight posted similar scores on the back nine but James Ravenel was at least two-shots better than anyone else on the front nine which secured him his first victory of the year. Julie Johnso posted a solid 92 to finish three shots back
The D flight tho had the most drama of all the flights as Kent Barker and Danny Alexander both finished one shot ahead of Justin Miller and had to take to a playoff on the course. With the time being an issue it was good it was settle on the first hole as Kent got up and down for a par to Danny’s bogie to give him his first victory of the year.
Our next event is Rivertowne, sign up early for this one as it is a limited player field.

JOHNS ISLAND SOCIAL WITHOUT THE RAIN!!

Traveling down Sat morning it appeared the day may be a wash or at least have several interruptions, but that wasn’t the case as the golf gods looked favorably towards us and pushed the rain off the coast just in time for us to start the tournament. It was Cart Path Only but overall, the pace was OKAY, we really should be playing in group in 4.5 hours max, especially at our next event at Orangeburg on April 8th. If you haven’t signed up for that, do so NOW it will be sold out in a couple days! Now to Golf;

In the Championship Flight Eric Hayes established an early three shot lead over the field only to be caught on the back nine by tour veteran Marty Bunch and the pair finished tied at 5 over par with Mike Cobb finishing one shot out of the playoff. With the first hole tied up they teed it up on the daunting 438 yard par 4 tenth hole. Both hit successful drives and reached the green in two, Eric safely in for par but then Marty stepped up and drained the Birdie for his first win of the season and served notice to the Champ flight to look out!
The A flight was also a battle all day with multiple people on top of the leader board and seven people finishing within 3 shots of the lead. Sean Kenneck, Tony Walters, and Nick Callahan all finished with super rounds of 76 to tie for first place. The playoff was won by Sean who made a par on the difficult hole while Tony and Nick both made a bogey. Tony won the scorecard playoff with a back nine score of 38 to Nick’s 39. Finishing a shot back Scott Kennedy and Justin Lippert tied with rounds of 77, both shot 39 on the back but Scott’s last six hole score of 27 was one better than Justin’s 28 so Scott grabbed the 4th place $$.
The B flight saw long time tour member Biff Huff and Andy Weeks battle all day long, being in the same group they saw it first hand. Both shot nice rounds of one over par on the front and then play the back almost identical as well so it came down to the last hole for these two. Felling the pressure, I am sure, neither was able to secure a par on the par five 18th but Biff’s bogie was one better than Andy’s double and that was the difference! Rounding out the top four was Bo Gordon (82) and Sean Metzger (83) who won the scorecard playoff over Chad Eldridge.
The C flight saw a repeat winner as Sam Marano, shot a nice round of 85 to secure his second consecutive victory. Sam finished one shot in front of Coll Whip Craig White and Nick Anderson who both fired rounds of 86 with Cool Whip securing the 3rd place money with a scorecard playoff victory by virtue of his back nine score of 41 to Nick’s 42.
The D flight saw another repeat winner from earlier in the year as Cleve Johnson kept his steady play up by recording a very nice round of 87 for an 8-shot victory over Dean Hill with Michael Miller rounding out the top 3.
The Closest to the pin winners saw a unique thing happen, Ron Cosgrove had hit it in close and Chad Eldredge also hit it close, the measurement was taken 4 times by 4 people and it was determined it was a tie so they each split the 70. The other winners were Glenn Eagerton, Hole 6, Sean Metzger hole 12 and Tim Parrish hole 16.

Spring Starter for a New Year and a New Tour

The Charleston tour kicked off their first ever tournament at Wild Dunes Harbor Course on the Isle of Palms on Wed March 1st. It must have pleased the golf gods because it was a picture perfect day on a beautiful golf course.
The Champ Flight was battle all day as Rand Mendez, Jack Stone and Mitch Marchman all finished within 2 stroke of each other. As always the 17th and 18th holes at the Harbor course were the difference maker’s as Jack had his hand on the trophy after 16 only to find some trouble on 17. In the end Rand fired a great 3 over par to secure his first ever Champ Flight Victory.
The A flight had one guy shoot the round of his golfweek life as yours truly fired his lowest round in 18 years and lowest ever round on the golfweek tour with a 1 over par 71 for the victory and a 5-shot win over Kevin Hadlock who fired a very smooth 76. Along with the Victory Yours truly earned a well-deserved promotion to the Championship flight. Third Place went to newcomer Dan Fagley who along with James Ravenel both fired rounds of 79 with Dan taking the scorecard playoff by virtue of his back nine score of 38 to James’ 40.
The B flight saw two friends play together all day and then to show they couldn’t get enough of each other, Roland Hoffman and Billy Hill decided to tie each other to play some extra holes. I should say extra hole, as after both carding spectacular rounds of 74, Roland took care of business on the first playoff hole to secure the victory. Rounding out the top three by virtue of another scorecard playoff was John Broome who tied Larry Hyman but fired a and even par back nine to secure the third-place finish.
The C flight was also a battle as Dennis Guerriero and Terry Lawson battled back and forth all day for the lead. Again it was the closing holes that helped determine the winner as Dennis hung on despite Terry’s charge on the last few holes. Terry was tied with Dennis till he hit a bump in the road on holes 14/15 to fall six shots back. Terry tried and made up five shots but Dennis held him off in an epic battle, 81 to 82. Rounding out the top three was Kevin Allardice who carded a nice round of 90.
The D flight saw Bob Hill take on Mike Miller all day and post a very respectable 96 to take home the first place trophy.
Overall it was a great day and our next event is at the Plantation Course @ Edisto, come on out for some more fun and competitive golf!

The Charleston Tour ventured down historic HWY 61 to take on Legend Oaks Golf Course. The weather turned out to be fabulous, the golf course was in superb shape and there definitely was some very nice golf on display.

The Champ Flight belonged to the new guys as Harrison Hall and James Starr battle along with Mike Cobb all day. Harrison and James finished tied at 5 over 77. They took to hole one for a playoff and it was the reining club champion at Legend Oaks defending his ground by capturing the playoff victory.
The A flight had five guys finish with-in three shots of each other. Dustin McGrath fired a four over 76 to secure a single shot victory over Tony Capehart. Jace Gause birdied 18 to secure third place. That was some great playing.
The B flight was Rick Dilsworth’s to win till he hit a wall on the back nine, going nine over on holes 15-16-17 to allow Tim Sumption to creep in and secure his second victory of the year. Phil Cala and Jimmy Jones both posted 10 over par 82’s but Phil’s back nine of 38 won the score card playoff over Jimmy.
The C Flight saw a first-time winner this year in Sam Marano who fired an 86 to secure a one-shot victory over Mr. Steady, Tim Parrish and Joseph Deese who both played spectacular. It was Sam’s almost ace on hole 11 that proved to be the difference.
The D flight also had a gentleman winning for the first time this year as Michael Miller post a very nice round of 95 to secure a three-shot victory of the D flight stud himself, Cleve Johnson! Rounding out the top three was Richard Norwood who had some opportunities on the back nine but Michael just kept his sound play all the way in.

The Charleston and Columbia Tour’s held their annual Monday madness event at Orangeburg Country Club on May 3rd. The course was in spectacular condition and the weather threatened a little rain but held off for what turned out to be a great day. We had 104 players signed up with a 102 competing.

In the Championship Flight, Phil Pfeiffer from Myrtle Beach came down because he said he heard good things about the course. It was a good thing he did as he fired a very nice round on one over par to slip by Jonathan Mulane and Andrew Locklier of Charleston who both posted solid rounds of 74 to tie for second place. It was Jonathan taking the scorecard playoff
In THE A flight. 4 shots separated the top 8 players, what a battle! Columbia’s Westfield Brown fired a 2 over par 74 to hold off Dan Wanner and Justin McBride who both finished one shot back with super rounds of 75 themselves. It was Justin taking the scorecard playoff over Dan
The B flight had John Saager and Tim Sumption were battling it out all day While Michael sickles who went off later said don’t forget about me. In the end it was Tim Sumption getting the one shot victory over John and two over Michael.
The C flight saw some great golf being played as Tony james from Augusta had his round of the year with a smooth 78 to take a two-shot victory over Charleston’s Lynn Rhode and Tyler martin who both fired their seasons best rounds of 80. It was Tyler taking the scorecard playoff
The D flight had the most drama as there was a three way playoff for first place between Murray Mixon, Kelvin Briggs and James Gainey. The first hole saw Murray bow out and on to hole #2 for James and Kelvin. Kelvin made a nice par save but James one-up’d him by making Birdie to seal the victory.

Winter Freezer Kicks off the season in Style

The Charleston Tour kicked off their Season at Wild Dunes Harbor Course and for once the weather cooperated….well sort of. The temperature’s reached inot the high 50’s but the wind also reached up into the high teens!
The Championship Flight had hank Seiling put together a very strong back nine that played into the wind to take home top honors. Hank’s back nine was two shots better than Mike Cobb’s and that proved to be the difference as Hank finished one shot in front of Mike with newcomer Terence Jenkins rounding out the top three in his first event.
In the A flight, Glenn Powell defended his title from last year by firing a very steady round of 76. Dan Wanner used a very solid finish of 4-4 on holes 17 and 18 to shoot 79 and finish in second place in front of trio of golfers who finished at 80. Daren Navaro, Sean Kenneck and Matt Latorre all tied with Daren take home the third place money on the back nine scorecard playoff.
The B flight had good friends Beth Hunt and John Saager battling it out all day. John was one shot back at the turn and Beth held him off and finished with a very nice round of 78 to John’s 80. There was a two-way tie for 3rd with Tim Sumption getting the nod with a back nine score of 37 to James Ravenel’s 40.
The C flight had the most excitement of the day as Julie Johnson and Sam Marano both posted nice rounds of 86 to finish tied for first one shot clear of Tom Brady. In the playoff, both Julie and Sam rolled in clutch birdies on the first hole. On the second hole Sam rolled in a par putt to take home the first place honors.
The D flight had a couple visitors show that their drive was well worth it. Randy Ross of the Atlanta tour had a very nice round of 90 to finish one shot in front of Charlestons Cleve Johnson and Eastern Tours Delfino Anguiano. Del took home second place money by virtue of his back nine score of 41 to Cleve’s 43.
All in all it was a great way to start the year. Our next local event at Rivertowne is quickly filling up so if you want to get in sign up soon!

Our fall festival was held this past Sat (12 Sep) at Crowfield Plantation Golf Course. The course was in good shape despite the tremendous amount of rain we have received.

The Champ Flight saw Matt McInnis and Eric Maland battle it out all day and then end the day tied. The two took to hole 1 for a playoff and Eric quickly ended things with a birdie on the first extra hole. Congrats Eric. The A flight saw some stellar play as Kevin Lyles continued his strong play with a 3 over par 75 to secure the victory. Glenn Powell had one miscue all day and it wound up costing him as he posted a very nice round of 77 to finish in second. Biff Huff the current points leader played well enough to hold onto the lead going into our final event of the year by taking home third place with a very nice round of 78.

The B flight also saw a playoff as Hilton Head’s John Robinson and Bert Boyd both fired very nice rounds of 81 to tie for first. Again on the playoff hole it was Bert Birdieing the first hole to take home the victory while John made par. John Saager and Glenn Eagerton both tied for third place with John taking the score card playoff with a back nie score of 42 to Glenn’s 46.

The C flight had some great play as Jack Overfield had an eagle to go along with his birdies to cruise to his victory with very nice round of 84. Jack King, 92 took third while Tyler Martin and Sean Metzger tied for third with Tyler taking home the third place money by virtue of the scorecard playoff.

In the D flight, Cleve Johnson played some of his best golf of the year to take home first place as he and Bill Northrop battled it out all day. Cleve’s strong front nine was the difference as he edged Bill for a one-shot victory.

Our last event of the year is the Military Tribute which had to be moved to a Monday for us to play. The date is 28 Sep and it will be a shotgun event. See ya all in the short grass.

Summerville Shoot-Out

The Charleston Golf week amateur tour ventured down old highway 61 to Legend Oaks to play the Summerville shoot out after having to postpone the military tribute at Paris Island.

The course was in very good shape, the weather was perfect and there was some outstanding golf played.

The Championship flight tackled the course from the tips measuring just over 7000 yards and newcomer Jack Ellis showed how best to play the course, steady and true as he had two bogies and one birdie to take home top honors by two shots over Mike Cobb, Chris Asbell and B.J. Hill who all posted very nice rounds of 75. Mike took home second place money based off the scorecard playoff.

The A flight saw 13 guys compete and all day it appeared to be a different guy in the lead. Dan Wanner after a couple of years without a victory returned to the form that helped him win the National Championship in 2014. Dan fired a 6 over par 78 to win by two shots over Glenn Powell and Eric Maland who both posted rounds of 80. Glenn edged Eric out on a scorecard playoff to take home second place money.

The B flight saw another player return to the victory lane as Rolland Hoffman played a very nice round and “kept everything in front of him” to win by 4 shots over returning player Billy Klaus who recorded a nice round of 86. Billy Hill rounded out the top three for the B flight.

The C flight saw long time player Cleve Johnson break a two-year victory drought with a very nice round of 86 to post a one-shot victory over Julie Johnson and Brian Gleber who both fired rounds of 87. Julie’s back nine of 45 edged out Brian on the scorecard playoff. CONGRATS CLEVE!!

The D flight saw Aaron Chase use his local member knowledge and really coast to a five-shot victory. Aaron started out on fire with a front nine of 40 and the ran into a little trouble on the back nine but was never in trouble. Mike Miller edged Tyler Martin by a shot for second and third place respectively.

Congrats to all and a special thanks goes out to Legend Oaks Neil Gowan for helping us really get this tournament going after Paris Island fell through.

Winter Freezer Lives up to its name AGAIN!!

The Charleston Tour kicked off their season at Wild Dunes Harbor Course with their annual “Winter Freezer” event which lived up to its name again. It was chilly but the golf was hot and the course despite being cart path only was in fantastic condition. The greens were spectacular.
The Championship flight was a fight throughout the day as Andy Balao, Mike Cobb and Dan Constatanino from the Upsate tour battled back and forth all day. The par five fourteenth was the crucial hole as Dan birdied it while Mike and Andy had a bogie and a double respectively. Daniel held on for the Victory with Mike finishing in second.
The A flight demonstrated how hot the golf was as Sean Kenneck made the turn in 3 under par with Birdies on the first two holes as well as hole 8. Playing along side Sean, Glenn Powell kept grinding away and fired a 1 under par 35 on the back nine to tie Sean at 74. The two took to an on the course playoff with Glenn making Par on the tough opening hole to secure his first victory of the year. Mark Ducker, 76 and Fred Dixon rounded out the top four.
The B flight saw Jace Gause and Roland Hoffman battle it out all day. Roland fired a nice 40 on the outward nine but Jace’s even par 36 on the back proved to be a bit to much as he edged out Roland by a shot 78 to 79.
The C flight had newcomer Michael Becker prove the chill and wind was very pleasant as he posted a very nice round of 84 to post his first victory of the year. Julie Johnson came out swinging and posted a solid round of 86 for sole possession of second place while Vince Ackerman, 88 and newcomer Jason Cooper 89 rounded out the top four.
The D flight had the field chasing down Aaron Chase! Aaron posted a nice round of 96 and challenged the flight to catch him. Michael Miller was up to the challenge as he posted a solid round of 94 to claim his first victory of the year!
Our next event is the Pawleys Island invitational in two weeks and our next local event will be the Seabrook (Crooked Oaks) Soiree on Feb 29th.
