Goodland Regional Medical Center is proud to support our local schools and is now featuring an Athlete of the Week for both Goodland High School and Fort Hays Tech Northwest.

Fort Hays Tech Northwest has selected freshman Samantha Sanderson as this week’s athlete of the week. Samantha is a member of the softball team and is currently pursuing a degree in construction technology. "Sami's hard work and dedication to softball and school have been unmatched," said Coach Armstrong. "Her hard work in the classroom has been amazing, maintaining a high GPA throughout the year. On the field, she has grown a lot, helping the team with great defensive plays."

Goodland High School has selected freshman, Avery weibel as this week’s athlete of the week. Avery is on the Track and Field team. "Avery Weibel as just a freshman, has made a big impact on our Girl’s Track and Field program. She has continued to improve in pole-vault and her running events throughout the year. She recently placed 3rd at the Wakeeney invitation in the 400m running a 1:03.89. She also ran a 2:33 split in the 4x800 relay, helping push that relay to running a 3A state 7th best time. She has also earned the anchor spot in our girls 4x400 that placed 1st at the WaKeeney meet. We have a great chance to qualify for state in both the 4x400 and 4x800 because of Avery. She is extremely coachable and truly enjoyable to have around, " Said, Head Track and Field Coach Jay Stout.

Fort Hays Tech Northwest has selected sophomore Legase Leaumoana as this week’s athlete of the week. She is currently studying Business Technology and is a member of the women’s Softball team. "Legase has been doing great work in the classroom," commented Coach Armstrong. "On the field she has been a consistent leader and off hitter for the softball team, leading by example with effort and hard work." Legase has also broken the record for most stolen bases in a season.

Goodland High School has selected freshman, Maleah Shinette as this week’s athlete of the week. "Maleah is off to an outstanding start in her high school career. As just a freshman, she came to the first track meet and broke a 33-year-old long jump record, going 17’6.5”. The very next meet, her and 3 other outstanding ladies broke the 4x100 meter relay record, running 50.96. In just the first two meets, two school records! I fully expect these records to be broken over and over again over the next 4 years of her track career. Maleah is just a freshman, has become a natural leader for the sprinter girls and I could not be prouder of her performance so far. She is hungry and driven to perform at a high level, and she will continue to do great things in future meets," said Head Coach Jay Stout.
