UCSB Ballroom Dance

UCSB Ballroom Dance Welcome to UCSB's Ballroom Dance page! See you on the dance floor! :) Awkward. Never fear! Have hope! This is the class where you'll HAVE FUN.

Like our page and you'll stay informed on the latest course information and updates, and dance-related activities and events. This is the class where Sensei begins by showing a moderately intricate dance move to the class twice and then says, "Ok, now you do that!" while the students look at each other and say "yeah right". This is the class where that giant Rob Gym room is filled past capacity a

s dozens of students bump into each other while attempting to learn the basics of dance. This is also the class where women almost always outnumber men who are then often forced to dance with themselves. This is the class where everyone embraces the awkwardness of Beginning ballroom and social dance; where wearing shoes, not sandals, is encouraged because your feet WILL get stepped on during the first few weeks. By the end of the quarter, students are spiraling and double crossing all over the place. Or Sensei will kick your ass. ;)

Dancing...
..is great exercise!..is a great way to meet people and make friends!..is a cool way to listen to all kinds of music...is an excellent social skill to have that will help you stand out in a crowd and leave a lasting impression on others.

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I wanted to reach out to the UCSB ballroom dance community and let you all know that last night Sensei Ota passed away.

For those of you that don't know Sensei very well, this man was a major force behind the creation of the UCSB ballroom community and without his indomitable will, his passion for dance, and his love for teaching, many of us would never have come to learn and love being on the dance floor. For me, personally, Sensei was one of the biggest reasons I got into and still am dancing. He inspired me to lead, to not take no for an answer, and to dream of a life doing what I was passionate about.
Regardless of whether you knew him or not I hope that in reading these words you see, for yourselves, an example of an individual who lived his long, full life doing what he loved and are as inspired by his memory as I was his person. Thank you Sensei for all that you've done. We'll see each other on the dance floor again someday.
