To our Isla Vista community:
We are sending this email today to show our support to the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. We hope that through this platform, and with the coalescent support of our staffers, members, and fellow gauchos, we can effect change and fight racism, bigotry, and the irresponsible use of police force in our communities. We believe this to be our civic duty, and we hope that you will join us.
To see the change we want to see in the world, it is imperative to speak out against systemic racism and show support for the black members of our community and beyond.
As this most recent tragedy has no doubt emphasized, people of color are killed by police at disproportionately higher rates than their white counterparts. We understand that this is a complicated issue - fighting for police reform is only the start, as the biases and inequities that lead to these issues are rooted deeply in the institutions, culture, and history of our nation.
Here at The Excursion Club, we urge you to come together with commitment and respect for the BLM movement in order to create a more equal and inclusive community and country. Demand justice for George Floyd and those that lost their lives before him.
There are a number of ways that you can help us and your community in the fight against racism and bigotry. Please consider some of these ideas - and feel free to share with us any ideas that you may have.

Consider participating in a peaceful protest - Please wear a mask and keep social distancing in mind! Although it is important to exercise activism, it’s important to keep yourself safe as well! The COVID-19 pandemic and the disproportionately high mortality rates seen in communities of color are another highlight of the inequities which exist in this country.
