To Become a Volunteer? The new train arrived on May 14, 2022, thanks to the generosity of so many citizens & local companies! Every Summer since 1955 (except Covid-19 Summer of 2020), volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro have operated the "Kiwanis Special” in the City of Goldsboro’s Herman Park. Net funds are used by the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro for the benefit of children in Wayne County, through organizations like Partnership for Children, Salvation Army, Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County and others. The new train was manufactured by Swannee River Railroad Company of Lufkin, TX using the same specifications as the original train described below. The goal is to keep this family tradition going for many more decades! The old locomotive and two cars were manufactured by The Miniature Train Company, in Rensselaer, Indiana around 1953. Not very many "park trains" like this one are left in the United States. New tracks were installed in 2010. The old train is now an antique, and was sold in May 2022 to a company in Vermont that is planning to totally restore the train to its original specifications and donate it to the Shelburne Museum, in Shelburne, VT to take visitors (on newly-laid tracks) to its outdoor exhibits. The locomotive was modeled (with permission) after the E & F locomotive units of the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors.
