Goldsboro wrestling had six members graduate yesterday. Everyone of these students gave their all towards one of the most challenging sports in the world. I love these kids like they're my own. As they venture out on their new journey, may they always know they have a home in Goldsboro High School's wrestling room.

Not to be cliché, but this quote by Dan Gable is one of the best in the business:

"Once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy."

Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek) was noted as saying "It's is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness, that is life."

Four years ago, Jessica "Venus" Zelaya decided to try out the new sport offered at Goldsboro High School. Wrestling was a demanding task, but she showed up every day. Eventually, she made a goal. She wanted to make it to the state wrestling tournament. She ran cross country. Practiced in the off-season. Changed her eating habits. Found different places to practice. Was early to practices and late to leave. She did it right. She was devoted. All while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
At regionals she lost a match, then went on a tear... winning four matches and securing her dream of making it to the State Tournament.
As far as placing at States, she fell short. But this young woman has forged a path that others can follow. She is the last of my firsts and GHS. The final wrestler that started this journey with me and the first to stick with me for four years. She will be one of those stories I tell kids for years to come.

Girl's regionals over and done! All our girls did amazing.
Congrats to regional qualifiers:

Jhyasia Johnson 0-2
Taniya Boney went 1-2
Masiya Boney went 2-2 losing in the blood round and
Jessica Zelaya went 5-1 and 3rd place🥉

Jessica punched her ticket to Greensboro next week to represent Goldsboro High School in the state championship.
