The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is dedicated to using the latest techniques for building fun, long-lasting, sustainable trails. Sustainable natural surface trails are constructed from native soils and come in the form of walking paths, running paths, nature trails, and mountain bike trails. The natural surface trails within Theodore Wirth Park officially opened in 2005 as a sanctioned fa

cility in the Minneapolis Park System. The trail was originally a demonstration project to prove the sustainability of off-road trails in the system. The project demonstrated that a sustainable, safe, and low-maintenance trail can protect natural resources, challenge off-road cyclists, and be compatible with other park uses. The trail was developed according to the International Mountain Biking Association best practices by MOCA (Minneapolis Off-Road Cycling Advocates) a supporting member of MORC and MORC (Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists). The partnership between these two groups and the Park Board is essential to the long life of the existing trails and the creation of new trails. Historical Profile: More information about this and other parks is included in Parks, Lakes, Trails and So Much More, a richly detailed account of the histories of Minneapolis’ renowned recreational system. Main off-road cycling areas within Theodore Wirth Park:

- North Loop: Approximately 3.5 miles of single track, .5 miles of which are expert
- South Loop: Approximately .66 miles of single track
- Glenwood Spur: Just short of a one-mile loop
- Southwest Wirth - 1.9 miles
- Brownie Lake (Future) - Distance TBD

Official Parking is at the Wirth Beach lot at Glendale and Theo Wirth Parkway....but riding to the centrally located trail is highly encouraged.

There are no known fatalities as yet, but we can hear the brambles giggling. This, obviously, cannot stand.

Meet a little before 5pm on Wednesday, June 24 at the top of the Brownie hill above the canoe racks to battle thorny, viney evil with us! If you can't make it at five, totally cool! Please be sure to sign both the 2026 waiver if this is your first 2026 session and the sign in sheet for the day before grabbing a tool.

BYO favorite hand tools are welcome, but we can only use people powered things which we have if you don't have a favorite hacking device. We strongly recommend sturdy shoes/work boots, gloves, water, bug spray and long pants. Eye protection wouldn't be a bad idea as well - green things will be flying if you're doing it right.

Join us in hitting bad things until they capitulate!

Weekend Update: Open

Most of the rain Friday was light, heavy stuff passed to the North.

Please let us know on Trailbot (ideally with picture and location) of any new big branches or trees that came down

Mother Nature says "nope" to trailwork this week. While we don't agree with the timing, she's totally right.

Next week or whenever we get a good projected Wednesday, we'll ask for a big event push to get folx out on the trail trimming. Rain thwarts trailwork, but is all about the brambles.

Please keep an eye out here and PLEASE RSVP for the upcoming trimming events. We have a finite supply of trimming tools and can buy/beg/borrow more if we know folx are heading out, but we can only do that if we know folx are heading out.

Singletrack looks like a bust for a while, but we hope you get out to grab whatever slice of outside is dry and available.

This is your Friday public service announcement. Yay! Friday!!!

Conditions as posted on stand. Still closed due to wet/muddy conditions.

There is a new restaurant in the Trail Head and it is dang amazing. I refuse to admit how Monday times I’ve been there to grab a sandwich or a pretzel. Just sayin….😎

Sandwich’s, salads, pretzels, coffee, beer, etc. It’s local…and it is tasty. Oh…and a super friendly staff.

Please support them as you are able before or after your ride…or just swing by to grab some tasty vittles on your way out of town to visit family.

Aki’s has the most amazingest pretzels in the Metro and now you can get them at the Trail Head.

Get some!

Theodore Wirth: MOCA/MORC Trails - OPEN (TACKY): Fully open for now.

We just received notification of a manageable tree down southbound in the end of the southwest section. We will do our best to resolve it after work tonight.

In the meantime, dismount and climb over/under.

Thank you Beth S for reporting the issue via Trailbot! You are awesome!

Some familiar faces came out to trailwork on Wednesday to give the landing zone below ThunderChicken ! a bit of spring sprucing up. We realigned the rocks and gave them a fresh cover of dirt. The dirt will eventually move off/erode back to bare rock, but for now the rocks are in stealth mode.

Thanks to everyone who came out!

Theodore Wirth: MOCA/MORC Trails - OPEN (TACKY): We had a short but grumpy bit of rain last night. Please give it a few hours to soak in before heading out. Truth be told, we need the rain. It’s getting dusty in places.

We also had yet another tree come down in the North Loop / Back 40. It not far after the monster that is down over the QBP boardwalk. Both are larger than we can manage with our cave person tools. MPRB Forestry has been informed and will resolve as quickly as they can with their vroom vroom tools.

The coming week looks like a possibility of rain pretty much every day. Get some today and Saturday before all that wetness from the sky gives us the sads.
