Growing up I loved reading and creative writing was one of my favorite subjects. I read all the time and I wrote poetry and short stories daily.
But somewhere between college and kids I stopped. Like completely. I hadn't read a book from cover to cover since last fall when I started realizing I needed to get my face out of my phone and back in a book. I was spending too much time scrolling social media and I felt like it was starting to have a negative impact on my brain and mood.
I told my brother last fall I was trying to read more again and he gifted me the book "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins for Xmas. With that I decided I needed to set myself a goal to read 1 book a month in 2023 which would have been 12 books for the year. I'll be honest, I was slightly worried I was setting the bar too high, but I knew deep down that if I was serious about feeling better mentally that at least 1 book a month was doable and that small steps = big outcomes over a period of time.
Little did I know that I'd completely smash my goal... By April 9th I finished my 13th book and started my 14th.
I can't believe how much healthier my brain feels not scrolling negative crap on social media and how much better I'm sleeping at night because instead of watching TV or staring at my phone I'm reading instead.
It feels SO good to get lost in books again and set entirely new goals for myself than my typical fitness stuff. I surprised myself, I'm proud of myself and I intend to keep it going 📖❤️
PS, thanks to all my friends and followers who have sent book recommendations!
