Foam rollers, sticks, lacrosse balls, spiky balls, inflatable balls, squishy balls, and more are found for self-myofascial release. But what really is the science behind the best tools to use?
Unfortunately, fascial science is young and research is lacking. However, there are some studies that demonstrate that a softer tool is better.
In one study, a group of 30 adults in their mid-60s found a greater release with a soft inflatable ball over a hard ball (similar to a lacrosse ball) for helping with they neck pain.
Another study showed a greater stress transfer (I.e. release) using a soft massage tool over a harder one.
To me this makes sense, as our nervous system controls our muscle tension. When we are in pain, muscles contract and have a harder time releasing. Using a softer tool and pressure would help to improve the response.
