Fun fact about MaKena

She doesn’t just show up on race day and hop in the kart! She races it, helps work on it, AND puts in the hours helping Dad prep the track before every race.

While most racers only see the finished track, MaKena knows the work it takes to get it there.

Her passion for racing goes way beyond being behind the wheel. She loves every part of it—the work, the dirt, the long hours, and of course, the racing.

Looks like the #8 is getting a little upgrade before Saturday!

After 3 seasons, MaKena’s motor finally said “I’m done” A new one is going in and she’ll be ready to hit the track this Saturday at 6pm.

A big thank you to one of her sponsors Just-IN-Time Heating & Cooling LLC for always supporting MaKena and helping keep her on the track racing. We appreciate you!

🏁 FUN FACT FRIDAY 🏁

Before the mini late models, modifieds, busted knuckles, late nights in the garage, and a wife wondering “what did you buy now?” 😂… there was a tiny John in a go-kart!

Yep, John’s racing addiction started when he was just a little guy behind the wheel.

Apparently once racing gets in your blood, there’s no getting it out the cars just got bigger, faster, and somehow the garage keeps getting fuller.

So what are the Boyd’s getting into this week? Well… apparently everything except relaxing. 😂

The mini late got its final touches last night and is officially Cortez, Colorado ready! One car checked off the list. ✅

But naturally, we couldn’t have an empty spot in the garage for too long. The modified rolled in, the old wrap is getting peeled off, the panels are coming off, new ones are on the way, and John is going through that thing with a fine-tooth comb. By the time he’s done, he’ll probably know every nut and bolt personally 😂 Before it ever sees the track, we want to know exactly what we’re working with.

And because one torn-apart race car clearly isn’t enough, MaKena’s kart is headed into the garage tonight. It’s getting stripped down, the bugs are getting chased out, and the #8 will be put back together and ready for her next race.

Technically, we’re OFF from racing this weekend… but “off” has a different meaning in the Boyd house.

Instead of racing, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find us in Show Low watching everyone else race.

Because apparently the Boyd family has two hobbies:

Racing… and preparing to go racing🤣

MaKena started her heat on the pole and was running an awesome race! She held the lead until lap 7 when she caught some lapped traffic, picked the wrong line, and second place was able to sneak by. She fought hard and brought it home 2nd in her heat!

She started the main in 4th and was doing amazing all race long. Then, on the last lap coming to the checkered, the kart suddenly lost all power and there was nothing she could do. She was heartbroken and definitely shed some tears, but she still finished the night in 5th place.

This girl just hasn’t had luck on her side these last three races, but she keeps showing up, keeps fighting, and keeps giving it everything she has. I’m praying some good luck finds her soon because she deserves a race where everything finally comes together.

For now, it’s back to the garage. We’ll tear the kart apart, figure out the bugs, get everything fixed, and get our girl ready to go after it again at the next one.

Bad luck doesn’t last forever. We’ll keep showing up until the good nights come.

We want to thank Justin and Katie and everyone who helped get MaKena going for her heat while we were in Showlow.

We would also like to thank her sponsors who continue to support her even on her bad nights.

After John’s fire, adding a fire suppression system to the car wasn’t even a question—it was a must. Fire safety is one of those things you don’t always think about until you’ve experienced firsthand just how quickly things can go wrong.

From that moment, one of our biggest goals was to help spread the word and hopefully get more drivers thinking about putting these systems in their own cars. We decided the best way to start was by donating the first system and getting it into the hands of another racer.

With the help of The Fugly Push Co and DRP Safety Team we were able to raffle off our first fire suppression system today at the Patrick Kop Memorial Race. As race parents ourselves, we couldn’t have been more excited when a kid won it for his race car. Knowing this system is going into a young racer’s car and could someday make all the difference is exactly why we wanted to do this.

A huge thank you to Brad Whitfield for allowing us to sell tickets in the pits and raffle the system off, and to The Fugly Push Co., DRP Safety, and The Race Shack for helping us sell tickets and make this happen.

This was only the first one. Our hope is to keep spreading awareness, keep pushing race car safety, and eventually help get even more of these systems into race cars.

Because apparently one racetrack in a day just isn’t enough for the Boyd’s. 😂

First up, track prep at the go-kart track. Then we’re jumping in the car and heading to Show Low for the Patrick Kop Memorial Race to raffle off the first fire suppression system.

As soon as that’s done, we’ll be turning around and heading right back, crossing our fingers we make it in time to catch MaKena’s main! 🤞

You ever hear the words “I found a really good deal” come out of your husband’s mouth and immediately know your life is about to get more complicated? 😂

Well, John found a “really good deal”… and now we own a modified.

Because obviously the Boyd family was getting a little too comfortable juggling a mini late model, go-karts, volleyball, Little League, school, work, race weekends, garage nights, and approximately 37 other things at any given moment.

Most people with a schedule like ours would say, “Maybe we should slow down.”

John said, “Hear me out…” 🤣

And somehow “hear me out” ended with another race car in the Boyd family.

At this point, I don’t even ask questions. I just update the calendar, make room in the garage, and accept that apparently our family motto is WHY HAVE FREE TIME WHEN YOU CAN HAVE RACE CARS?

So here we go… a new car, a new adventure, and another chapter of the Boyd family doing what we do best — staying entirely too busy and having a whole lot of fun doing it.
