I believe the time has come and it’s long overdue for our community to combine the schools. Pull our resources together and promote our children and students as a community. So many resources and opportunities are being lost to our students academically.
Both schools are at the bottom of their divisions student population wise. Miami is listed as having 287 students, which is small even for a 2a school. Globe is listed as having 514 students, which is on the bottom end of the 3a division. Times are tough and we hear all the time, how hard it is for both schools to find and keep teachers.
I believe our students are losing out on being able to have a diversity of different classes and curriculum. There’s stuff that simply isn’t available to them, due to enrollment numbers. With a bigger pool of students, it is my opinion that it would open doors for different extracurricular activities and programs. And that the possibilities could become endless for our children. A small for instance is choir, band, archery clubs, drama, chess, hiking, and bass fishing clubs. Yes some of these are already in place. But have you seen how many students are participating in band anymore?!?!
Sports are struggling to gather and maintain programs. I’ve been told that Globe and Miami have a co-op soccer team, because there aren’t enough kids to form teams for each school. But, that they aren’t aloud in the playoffs because it is a co-op. Track, wrestling, golf, tennis all have struggled to maintain throughout the recent years.
The people of this community play sports together their entire childhoods. And then we split them up as they start playing for the schools. Imagine the revenue, that could be generated from an entire community wearing one schools colors and attire. Fundraising as a community, showing up to support our children as a community. We play the copper kettle once a year and look at the attendance for that one game. Now imagine if just half that attendance showed up to support our kids for all the games. Some of you are too caught up on winning one game. We need to worry about winning all of them. I’ve heard before, that by combining the schools you would have kids that wouldn’t get to play. I do believe that might’ve been the case at one time, but it just no longer applies.
I don’t really know what it would take to combine the schools. But I figured if I started this page that maybe with enough support, we might find somebody who does.
